Company Overview Under the direction of the General Counsel Office of Catholic Charities, the Attorney shall be responsible for responding to the legal needs of the Agency and its various corporate affiliates. Responsibilities also may include handling a variety of legal matters for nonprofit organizations, including entity formation, corporate governance, tax‑exemption issues, and compliance with fundraising and political activities regulations, and ensuring the Agency’s compliance with various laws, rules and regulations as a part of the Agency’s Corporate Compliance Office. Duties and Responsibilities Advise on entity formation and corporate governance for nonprofit organizations. Manage federal and state tax‑exemption matters. Ensure compliance with fundraising and political activities regulations. Draft and review contracts and general business law documents. Prepare for complex cases involving Labor Law, Disabilities, etc. Confers with specialists, technical experts, and other attorneys. Negotiate and implement the settlement of claims. Review, revise and approve agreements. Analyze studies and reports on the effects of city, state and federal legislation and regulation. Gather documentation, investigate and prepare reports and settlement recommendations regarding claims. Analyze the relative strength of cases and evaluate the appropriateness of settlements. Review internal settlement recommendations. Gather evidence and assist in researching issues. Appear at pre‑hearing conferences; review administrative decisions. Research state and federal case law and implications for settlement negotiations. Review, revise and approve stipulations of settlements. Prepare preliminary reports, statistical data and recommendations pertaining to cases. Serve Team Leader, prepare and present and settle cases. Manage case assignments for ten‑day letters, due process proceedings and settlements. Involved with corporate non‑profit legal matters. Lead or co‑lead confidential investigations and advocacy projects regarding students with brain injury, including conducting interviews of families, witnesses and service providers, reviewing and analyzing extensive documentary evidence, and performing other investigatory activities. Cultivate and maintain effective working relationships with local, state, and federal agencies and organizations. Travel within New York State and occasionally outside of state. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications The position requires a juris doctor degree, a current license to practice law in the State of New York. Ten years of relevant legal experience. Proficiency in working with 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 501(c)(6) organizations. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to understand provisions of applicable laws and regulations. Excellent legal research and writing skills. Ability to conduct research and analyses of pertinent legal authority. Ability to analyze complex problems and develop creative solutions. Effective communication skills sufficient to conduct investigations, actively promote legal, policy and legislative developments at federal, state and local government levels, and develop and conduct trainings. Ability to represent clients in legal hearings, meetings, negotiations or administrative proceedings. Experience working with or sensitivity to individuals with disabilities. Ability to work independently with appropriate supervision. Demonstrated ability to take a leadership role in case planning or project coordination. Knowledge of laws, rights, and services as they pertain to people with disabilities, and/or direct representation of people with disabilities. Bilingual Spanish speaking preferred.
