Mens Apparel Surface/Print Designer

We are  working on filliing a full-time freelance role for at least 3 months to start. Role is based in midtown NYC - 4 days onsite and 1 remote each week.  

• Surface/Print/Graphic Designer 
• Pay rate approximately $50 an hour. 
• Full time hours - 4 days onsite and 1 remote each week. 

Responsibilities:

• Strong surface design background who can contribute immediately to original artwork development and execute production-ready files.
• complexity to handle engineered artworks and the need for original Graphic concept development 
• The ideal candidate combines strong creative sensibility with technical precision—able to translate concept into production-ready artwork while partnering closely with mills.  

Surface Design & Artwork Development

• Create high-volume, original print and graphic artworks across multiple categories, including wovens and knits
• Execute both digital print and screen print artwork with strong attention to color, composition, scale, and repeat.
• Adapt and evolve seasonal concepts into commercially viable, brand-aligned designs.
• Support developments with elevated, detail-driven artwork execution.

Production & Technical Execution

• Prepare production-ready files in Photoshop, ensuring accuracy in repeats, separations, and color builds.
• Translate artworks into engineered placements aligned with marker layouts (training provided as needed).
• Ensure all artwork aligns with garment construction, specs, and factory requirements.

Mill Communication & Development

• Partner directly with mills to execute developments, including reviewing s/offs and providing clear approval/redline direction.
• Provide clear, actionable comments to mills to maintain quality and design integrity.
• Troubleshoot artwork and production challenges in real-time to meet deadlines.

Key Qualifications

• Experiencein surface design or print/graphic development
• Advanced proficiency in Adobe Photoshop (critical requirement)
• Strong experience across digital and screen print techniques
• Proven ability to manage high-volume artwork output under tight timelines
• Strong understanding of print production processes, including repeats, separations, and color management across digital and screen print methods.
• Experience communicating with overseas mills and providing strike-off feedback
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in engineered print placements
• Background in knit and woven product categories
• Familiarity with working within brand DNA while adapting to multiple tiers 
• Experience creating complex, layered artworks combining original design and purchased studio assets.
• Knowledge of basic garment construction background is helpful but can be trained on site.
• Fast, efficient, and detail-oriented
• Strong eye for color, pattern, and composition
• Comfortable working in a production-driven, high-output environment
• Clear communicator who can bridge design intent with technical execution
