Social Media Associate

Hera

Bonsai Leadership Group is excited to support HERA in its search for a Social Media Associate.

ABOUT HERA

Established in 2023, HERA is a dynamic, global non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to protecting the health, income, and dignity of women on the frontlines of extreme heat. Given the significant gap in the understanding of extreme heat and its disproportional effects on women, HERA was co-founded by four women leaders who care deeply about addressing climate change and its impacts on women and vulnerable communities.

In its first two years, HERA has raised more than $20 million to expand its programs and impact. Today, HERA operates in eight countries, including Sierra Leone, Pakistan, Ghana, Liberia, Thailand, India, Kenya, and the United States. With local partners, HERA creates and delivers practical, durable solutions shaped by the experiences and needs of marginalized women toward better health, more income, and sustained dignity. Learn more about HERA at heranow.org.

THE OPPORTUNITY

HERA seeks a creative, highly organized, and globally minded Social Media Associate to support the growth, consistency, and impact of its digital presence. Reporting to the Communications Director, the Social Media Associate will coordinate HERA’s day-to-day social media presence, maintain a forward-looking global content calendar, create compelling written and visual content, monitor engagement, and use analytics to strengthen digital strategy over time.

The Social Media Associate will collaborate closely with the Communications Director, Communications Manager, program teams, fundraising colleagues, and external consultants or vendors, including video editors, graphic designers, photographers, and content creators in different regions.

This is a hands-on role for a strong writer and digital storyteller who understands how social media moves, adapts to changing platforms, and translates complex global issues into clear, accessible, and compelling stories.

Successful candidates will bring excellent writing skills, strong creative instincts, solid multimedia production abilities, and experience creating content for global or cross-cultural audiences, along with the organizational discipline to coordinate work across teams, time zones, campaigns, and platforms.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Social Media Channel Management and Strategy

  • Develop, coordinate, and maintain a global social media content calendar aligned with organizational priorities, campaigns, events, advocacy work, and fundraising goals.
  • Coordinate the consistent, timely, and organized distribution of content across HERA’s social media platforms, including Instagram, LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Facebook, and emerging or globally relevant channels such as TikTok, YouTube, and others.
  • Support the development of HERA’s broader digital strategy, including recommendations on platform use, audience growth, content mix, posting cadence, and engagement opportunities.
  • Stay current on social media trends, platform shifts, audience behaviors, and emerging digital storytelling practices.
  • Coordinate content needs across internal teams and external partners, ensuring HERA has the right assets, approvals, captions, links, and timing to execute social media campaigns effectively.

Copywriting and Creative Storytelling

  • Write clear, persuasive, and creative social media copy tailored to diverse global audiences.
  • Translate complex women-centered climate, health, and human rights issues into accessible, compelling, and action-oriented digital narratives.
  • Ensure consistency in messaging, tone, voice, and brand identity across digital channels.
  • Create content that drives awareness, audience understanding, engagement, and, when relevant, support for fundraising and campaign goals.
  • Adapt content for different platforms, audiences, geographies, and cultural contexts.
  • Collaborate with communications, program, and fundraising colleagues to source stories, shape messages, and align digital content with organizational priorities.

Multimedia Content Creation and Coordination

  • Create and edit highly visual content that supports HERA’s written narratives and campaign goals.
  • Support the development of short-form and long-form multimedia content, including reels, short videos, graphics, social cards, and tailored digital assets for social platforms and advocacy campaigns.
  • Use tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, Figma, and related platforms to produce polished, platform-ready content.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners across regions to source raw footage, photos, stories, and visual assets.
  • Coordinate with contractors or vendors supporting video editing, photography, graphic design, or other digital deliverables.
  • Support live event coverage as needed, including capturing or coordinating social media content at conferences, retreats, meetings, and other HERA events.

Community Engagement and Digital Growth

  • Monitor social media channels and support timely, thoughtful audience engagement.
  • Help grow digital visibility, community interaction, and audience reach through targeted engagement, content testing, and platform-specific strategies.
  • Identify opportunities to deepen relationships with HERA’s audiences, partners, supporters, and communities through digital channels.
  • Bring a global lens to community engagement, recognizing that audiences in different regions engage with platforms and content in different ways

Analytics, Reporting, and Learning

  • Track and analyze social media performance across platforms, including engagement, reach, audience growth, content performance, and campaign outcomes.
  • Use native platform analytics and social media management tools such as Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Buffer, Meta Business Suite, YouTube Studio, or similar platforms.
  • Prepare routine reports on social media performance and digital asset effectiveness.
  • Use data and insights to recommend improvements to content strategy, posting schedules, platform priorities, and audience engagement.
  • Support HERA’s metrics, evaluation, and learning efforts by contributing digital performance data and insights.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will bring a strong mix of writing, social media management, content creation, organization, and global communications experience. HERA recognizes that strong candidates bring a range of professional and lived experiences. Candidates are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every qualification listed. Desired qualifications include:

  • 2-4 years of relevant experience in social media management, copywriting, digital content creation, communications, advocacy campaigns, or related fields, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex issues into clear, compelling digital content for diverse global audiences.
  • Strong organizational and project coordination skills, including experience managing content calendars, multiple deadlines, cross-functional input, and fast-moving priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to create, adapt, and optimize content for major social media platforms, including Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and X/Twitter.
  • Familiarity with social media scheduling, management, analytics, multimedia, and design tools, such as Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Buffer, Meta Business Suite, YouTube Studio, Canva, CapCut, Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, or similar platforms.
  • Strong collaboration and relationship building skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, contractors, consultants, vendors, photographers, designers, video editors, and global partners.
  • Cultural awareness and global communications experience, including the ability to create content for audiences across regions, cultures, and time zones.
  • Familiarity with paid social media, fundraising-related digital campaigns, newsletters, email marketing platforms, accessibility best practices, or languages other than English is a plus.
  • Commitment to equity, feminist values, and global inclusivity, with an ability to reflect those values in digital storytelling and collaboration.
