Position: Special Education Coordinator (SEC) Location: Assigned to the Student Services Division; Location TBD Start Date: August 2026 Reports to: Principal and Student Services Administrators Compensation: Refer to current teacher salary scale on District website Work Year: 10 months Position Goal The goal of the Special Education Coordinator is to ensure the effective implementation of special education services in compliance with federal, state, and district regulations while promoting high-quality instruction and equitable access to educational opportunities for students with disabilities. The coordinator supports school administrators, teachers, and related service providers in developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), monitoring student progress, and ensuring services are delivered in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). This position works collaboratively with staff, families, and community partners to strengthen inclusive practices, support student achievement, and ensure that students with disabilities make meaningful academic, social, and emotional progress aligned with state standards and district curriculum. The Special Education Coordinator also provides leadership in professional development, program oversight, and data analysis to continuously improve special education programming and outcomes. Minimum Requirements Must be eligible or hold certification as a Teacher of Special Education K-12 Minimum of five years of experience as a Special Education Teacher or relevant certification as a related service provider. Master's Degree in Special Education or School Leadership, preferred. Acceptable Criminal Background Report and no entries on Child Protection Registry in the state of Delaware. Knowledge and skills in working with students with disabilities. Ability to support students who require help with physical positioning and self-care (e.g., eating and bathrooming), including physically lifting students using specialized techniques and equipment. This job requires repetitive stooping, twisting and bending. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk and sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. All new hires must complete the Level 1 training program by June 1st of the contract school year as a condition of continued employment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, administration and the general public. Show evidence of knowledge regarding evidence and research-based strategies known to be effective in promoting student learning and achievement for students with disabilities. Demonstrates sensitivity to issues impacting various cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Proficient in technology, such as Microsoft and Google Applications, Classlink, Schoology, Infinite Campus, etc. Demonstrates understanding and ability to perform job related tasks. Regular attendance is an essential function of the position. Must be able to teach/serve students remotely and in person depending on the needs of their students. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Plan, schedule, and facilitate Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings within required district, state, and federal timelines, ensuring meetings are conducted in a professional, collaborative, and compliant manner. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and district regulations related to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), including accurate documentation, monitoring of services, and adherence to procedural timelines. Review student records, IEP documents, and supporting paperwork prior to implementation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with legal and district requirements. Maintain accurate and timely recordkeeping and reporting, including monitoring electronic systems such as PowerSchool and eSchool/Infinite Campus to ensure student data aligns with official student records and files. Organize, monitor, and support case manager responsibilities to ensure consistent implementation of IEPs, progress monitoring, documentation, and service delivery. In collaboration with the IEP team, plan and manage programs and services designed to support appropriate progress for students with disabilities and provide responsive support to their families. Provide consultation and guidance to teachers, administrators, and IEP teams regarding instructional strategies, behavioral interventions, accommodations, and effective implementation of student IEPs. Collaborate with district and building instructional staff to improve educational outcomes for students with disabilities and promote inclusive practices. Deliver professional development and training to staff regarding district initiatives, special education procedures, compliance expectations, and effective instructional practices under IDEA. Communicate proactively and effectively with parents, students, staff, and district personnel while maintaining confidentiality in accordance with FERPA, IDEA, and other applicable federal and state regulations. Respond to parent inquiries and requests regarding IDEA-related matters for students within the assigned building, including students who are parentally placed in private or parochial schools. Provide regular updates to the building principal regarding the status of case manager responsibilities, compliance monitoring, and special education programming. Assist the school leadership team with school operations, climate initiatives, and instructional leadership activities related to special education programming. Communicate regularly with staff regarding special education services, procedures, and program expectations to ensure consistent implementation. Maintain current knowledge of special education law, regulations, and best practices, and participate in professional development opportunities including Special Education Coordinator PLCs and district meetings. Maintain valid Delaware certification and required clock hours through DEEDS; stay current on evidence-based practices for students with significant disabilities and actively engage in required and self-selected professional learning aligned to role responsibilities. Comply with all Federal, State and Local regulations and policies: accurately complete required paperwork within designated timelines, utilize district resources to maintain professionalism and avoid noncompliance, and cooperate with compliance monitoring and dispute resolution activities. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Building Administrators or Student Services Administrators.
