Re-Entry Specialist, Security (Community Corrections)

$26.97 per hour

The Northwest Regional Re-entry Center

Job Description

Job Description

Since 1964, the Northwest Regional Re-Entry Center (NWRRC) has been a nonprofit leader in structured reentry services, operating a 150-bed co-ed residential center in Portland, Oregon. We support, educate, and encourage justice-involved residents as they transition back to the community with improved life skills, accountability, and safety for all.

As a Resident Re-Entry Specialist , you will provide 24-hour supervision and monitoring of residents in our facility and during approved community activities. This is a security-focused role that works to maintain a safe, secure, professional, and structured environment while enforcing rules, managing an approved pass system, and balancing accountability. Some duties are gender-specific (e.g., conducting same-gender pat-down searches and observed urinalysis) due to the facility's co-ed nature. This is an ideal position for someone who is interested in criminal justice, corrections, social services, behavioral health, security, or reentry support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor resident behavior and activities 24/7 to ensure compliance with facility rules and regulations; supervise resident activities and document and respond to unusual or concerning behaviors.
  • Maintain a secure and orderly environment through regular facility/perimeter patrols, headcounts/accountability counts, and searches of resident rooms, property, vehicles, phones, personal items, and residents (including pat-downs).
  • Conduct same-gender pat-down searches and observed urine collection/breathalyzer testing for residents and contract clients.
  • Control and dispense resident medications, self-carry medications, and controlled food supplements.
  • Administer an automated system to track resident accountability during approved absences (e.g., work, social passes); document telephonic and in-person communications with entries and notations.
  • Monitor electronic monitoring (GPS) reports for residents in the community and on home confinement.
  • Maintain sanitation of the facility and grounds through monitoring resident chores.
  • Control all entry and exit into the facility to ensure security; manage visitor procedures.
  • Respond to emergencies swiftly and appropriately.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for law enforcement, U.S. Marshals, U.S. Probation Officers, Bureau of Prisons personnel, and other related agencies.
  • Maintain accurate incident logs, documentation of all facility activities, and serve as the information center for resident activities-responding to and reporting on all incidents.

Compensation & Benefits (for Full-Time Employees)

  • Starting Hourly Rate: $26.97
  • Healthcare: 100% employer-covered medical, vision, dental premiums for employees; 50% for spouse/dependents (includes life/AD&D/long-term disability).
  • PTO/Vacation: Up to 24 days annually.
  • Sick Time: Up to 12 days annually.
  • Retirement: SEP-IRA with 7% employer contribution (after 1 year).
  • Tuition Assistance: Up to 50% for related degrees/certificates (after 6 months).
  • Fitness Stipend: Up to $50/month.
  • Free Meals: Complimentary cafeteria meals daily.

Qualifications:

  • Education : Minimum High School Diploma or GED required. Preference for advanced degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Psychology, Social Work, or closely related field.
  • Experience : Prior experience in re-entry, corrections, law enforcement, security, residential living, mental health, social services, or related field preferred.

Key Competencies :

  • Situational awareness: Maintain vigilance and quickly assess dynamic situations.
  • Conflict resolution: Effectively de-escalate conflicts and manage challenging behaviors while maintaining boundaries.
  • Communication: Clear, professional verbal and written interaction with residents, staff, visitors, and agencies.
  • Attention to detail: Accurate documentation, thorough searches, and protocol compliance.
  • Adaptability: Adjust to unpredictable situations and evolving protocols.
  • Technical proficiency: Learn and operate automated systems, electronic monitoring tools, and devices.
  • Team collaboration: Work effectively with diverse staff to support operations.
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, strong interpersonal skills, and commitment to building positive relationships.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • Pass a comprehensive pre-employment process.
  • Valid Driver's License with a favorable driving record.

Availability & Shifts

NWRRC operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Candidates must be available for any shift and any day of the week. Schedules are designed to be consistent with consecutive days off for work-life balance (preferences based on seniority and operational needs).

Shifts include:

  • Day: 6:00am–2:00pm
  • Swing: 2:00pm–10:00pm
  • Graveyard: 10:00pm–6:00am

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods, including navigating stairs and uneven surfaces during patrols.
  • Quick response to incidents while maintaining situational awareness.
  • Sufficient strength and dexterity to conduct pat-down searches, room/property/vehicle searches, and operate security/monitoring equipment.
  • Lift and carry up to 25 pounds; bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach overhead.
  • Perform repetitive tasks such as pat searches and administering drug/alcohol tests.
  • Adequate vision and hearing to monitor residents, detect risks, and respond to alarms/emergencies.
  • Manual dexterity to operate automated tracking systems, electronic monitoring tools, communication devices, and perform First Aid/CPR/AED procedures.

Why Join Us?

Joining NWRRC means playing a key role in supporting individuals making significant life changes. You'll make a tangible impact on residents' successful reintegration while working in a professional, supportive, mission-driven environment that prioritizes both accountability and compassion.

NWRRC is an equal employment opportunity employer.
