Summary The School Counselor/Social Worker provides a comprehensive counseling and student support program that promotes students' academic achievement, social-emotional development, behavioral success, and college and career readiness. The School Counselor/Social Worker collaborates with students, families, staff, administrators, and community partners to identify and remove barriers to learning while fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment. The School Counselor/Social Worker provides direct student services, consultation, crisis response, and prevention programming, and maintains professional competence through continuing education, professional development, and collaboration with colleagues. Essential Functions Provides classroom lessons to teach academic, college and career readiness, and social-emotional skills. Provides individual and small-group counseling to support students' academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and career development. Assesses student needs and develops intervention strategies that promote academic success, attendance, engagement, and overall well-being. Provides crisis intervention, risk assessment, safety planning, and referrals to appropriate school and community resources. Collaborates with students, families, staff, administrators, and community agencies to identify barriers to learning and coordinate student supports. Participates in multidisciplinary teams, including MTSS, Section 504, special education, attendance, threat assessment, and other student support teams as assigned. Supports implementation of interventions and services that promote positive school climate, student wellness, equity, and student success. Assists students with academic planning, goal setting, educational planning, transitions, and college and career readiness activities appropriate to the assigned grade level. Provides consultation and resources to staff and families regarding student academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and mental health needs. Maintains confidential student records, documentation, and reports in accordance with district policy and state and federal law. Communicates effectively with students, families, staff, and community partners regarding student progress, interventions, and available supports. Reports suspected child abuse, neglect, threats to student safety, and other mandatory reporting requirements in accordance with state law and district policy. Establishes and maintains positive, effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of work. Attends and participates in staff meetings, professional development, school committees, and other district activities as required or assigned. May support student scheduling based on site level. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate (ESA) Certificate with appropriate School Counselor or School Social Worker endorsement. Education and Experience Must meet applicable Washington State certification requirements for the assigned ESA role. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Knowledge of child and adolescent development. Knowledge of counseling principles, intervention strategies, crisis response, social-emotional learning, and student support services. Knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), Section 504, special education referral processes, and student intervention systems. Knowledge of Washington State attendance requirements, mandatory reporting laws, and applicable state and federal regulations. Knowledge of culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and restorative practices. Skill in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, consultation, and collaborative problem-solving. Skill in organization, documentation, and maintaining confidential records. Skill in oral and written communication. Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with students, families, staff, and community partners. Ability to collaborate effectively as a member of multidisciplinary teams. Ability and commitment to work effectively with a diverse student population. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, racial, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Ability to analyze student needs and develop appropriate intervention strategies. Ability to utilize technology to maintain records, communicate, and support student services. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment. Ability to adapt to change and remain flexible. Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations. Ability to serve as a positive role model while maintaining professional boundaries. Licenses/Special Requirements Successful clearance of criminal justice fingerprint and background check. CONDITIONS Required to respond to a wide range of academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and crisis situations involving students. May experience frequent interruptions and must be able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. May work with students and families experiencing significant emotional distress and may be exposed to infectious diseases. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate verbally, hear conversations, operate computers and other office equipment, and move throughout school buildings. This position requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching, and occasional lifting and carrying of materials weighing up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Environmental Factors Moderate to loud noise levels typical of school environments. Work may occur in classrooms, offices, common areas, and occasionally outdoors during school activities.
