Structural Project Manager, Healthcare

Position Overview GPLA, part of the DPR Family of Companies, is a leading firm in structural engineering, dedicated to delivering innovative and efficient solutions for a wide range of construction projects. We are seeking a Structural Project Manager, Healthcare with a strong background in healthcare and hospital projects. This individual is responsible for overseeing and managing projects from conceptual design through construction completion. The role involves coordinating and supervising all aspects of the structural design process through completion of the construction administration phase, ensuring that the structural components are designed, modeled, detailed, and delivered in accordance with the project’s scope, budget, and schedule expectations. The Structural Project Manager, Healthcare will work closely with the design and construction team members to deliver a safe and cost-efficient structural design that meets or exceeds GPLA’s standards and expectations. This position will also have a specific focus on healthcare and hospital project experience within the state of Arizona, including compliance with the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS), local building jurisdictions, and the International Building Code (IBC) with Arizona amendments. Responsibilities Mentor and manage Structural Designers I, II, Structural Design Engineers, and Structural Project Engineers. Manage the production of drawings, specifications, and calculations throughout the design cycle from conceptual design to completion of construction documents. Review deliverables to ensure the scope and quality standards are met. Develop a comprehensive project plan outlining objectives, scope, deliverables, and timelines. Manage construction administration tasks such as reviewing shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and site visits. Oversee development of structural designs and analytical models for various building types and materials. Perform and review calculations and analyses to guarantee structural integrity and code compliance. Maintain working knowledge of all relevant codes, including Arizona healthcare and hospital design requirements governed by ADHS and local authorities. Utilize CAD software, including Tekla Structures, and other tools to create 2D drawings and 3D models. Manage team members (engineers, modelers, detailers) to meet project deadlines and deliver high-quality design solutions within budget. Collaborate with external stakeholders such as architects, contractors, and MEP designers. Lead project design meetings, setting agendas, taking notes, and providing minutes. Stay updated with industry trends, code updates, and advancements in structural design techniques and technologies. Identify opportunities for process improvement, cost optimization, and efficiency enhancement, and implement initiatives for continuous improvement. Monitor project costs, track expenses, and manage the project budget, including monthly status reports. Invoice and pursue payment and identify and pursue appropriate change orders due to modifications. Provide mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities to team members. Required Skills & Abilities In‑depth knowledge of structural engineering principles, codes, and standards. Familiarity with structural design and analysis, materials, and construction techniques for informed decisions and regulatory compliance. Comprehensive understanding of Arizona building codes, standards, and healthcare facility requirements, including ADHS, local municipalities, and IBC with Arizona amendments. Subject‑Matter Expert (SME) capability in specific knowledge areas. Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve construction‑process issues. Excellent verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to convey technical information clearly and manage stakeholder expectations. Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize and lead multiple projects simultaneously in a fast‑paced environment. Attention to detail to ensure accuracy and quality in design plans, specs, and documentation. Effective teamwork skills, including active listening, negotiation, and conflict resolution. Adaptability and decision‑making ability to handle unexpected challenges and changes. Proficiency in CAD and other structural engineering software, and project‑management tools. Commitment to staying updated with industry trends, new technologies, and regulatory changes. Demonstrated project‑management experience, including planning, organizing, and executing projects from start to finish. Knowledge of financial and budget management principles, including cost tracking, budget monitoring, and cost‑effective decision‑making. Education & Experience Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a structural focus. Master’s degree in Structural Engineering preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) license required; Structural Engineer (SE) license preferred. Maintain an NCEES license record. Eight years of experience in the building structural engineering field, with preferred experience in Arizona healthcare and hospital projects. Strong familiarity with HCAI/OSHPD work in California preferred. Physical Requirements Ability to sit or stand at a desk and work from a computer for prolonged periods. Travel to project locations as needed across the country. Ability to lift a minimum of 15 lbs if required.
