Senior Maintenance Worker

The Position Senior Maintenance Workers perform semi‑skilled and limited skilled work in the maintenance, repair and minor construction of municipal landscaped areas such as parks and parkways, streets and sidewalks, storm drains, buildings and related facilities. They perform manual tasks, operate power tools and medium to heavy‑duty automotive and related equipment. Duties may include giving guidance and direction to lower‑level maintenance workers and supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the assigned Supervisor. The ideal candidate has a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Key Responsibilities by Assignment General duties: landscape, irrigation, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry, concrete, painting and other similar maintenance and repair trades. Emergency response during and after working hours. Lead worker and supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the assigned supervisor. Other related work as required. Scope of Duties for Specific Divisions Streets and Storm Drains: manual labor tasks in maintenance, repair and minor construction of streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, traffic signs and channels; concrete installation; asphalt installations; inspection and maintenance of drainage facilities; operation of Vactor truck, backhoe, paving machine, paving roller, ten‑wheel dump truck, grinding machine, loader/grader and street sweeper. Traffic Signs and Markings: stripes streets, lays out and paints traffic lines and turn pockets according to specifications; installs and maintains traffic and street signs. Graffiti Abatement: removes or conceals graffiti on public and private property using equipment and chemicals; paints over graffiti, matches and mixes paints; pressure‑washer cleaning; maintains log of inspections and removal activities; coordinates community service hours; maintains related records and inventory. Street Sweeping: sweeps city streets, rebuilds sweeper brooms; operates regenerative air‑vacuum street sweeper, backhoe, skip loader, ten‑wheel dump truck and other equipment; removes debris, spills, vehicle‑accident debris; replaces damaged signs; performs trash receptacle and bus‑stop maintenance. Parks/Parkways: grounds keeping, sprinkler system installation and repair; prepares and repairs ball fields; repairs park building; performs minor plumbing installation and repair; manages trees and shrubs. Education, Training and Experience High school graduation or equivalent. Two (2) years experience in performing manual labor tasks and operating tools and equipment. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Licenses and Certificates Valid Class C California Driver’s License, or higher, required before appointment. Class B or higher license may be needed for specific assignments. Hazardous Materials First Responder certification and I.S.M.A. Work Zone Safety certification desirable and may be required after probation for certain assignments. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of standard tools, materials, equipment and methods of maintenance and repair work related to the assignment area. Knowledge of prevailing codes, hazards and safety practices related to the area of assignment. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to interpret and follow verbal and written instructions, including technical specifications. Ability to safely operate and maintain the tools and equipment. Ability to organize and prioritize work. Ability to establish effective working relationships with co‑workers, vendors and the public.
