The Quality Control Technician inspects precast and prestressed concrete products to ensure they meet strict industry and internal quality standards. This role combines hands-on inspection, testing, and documentation with close collaboration across production and quality teams. The technician also supports housekeeping efforts and applies 5S organizational practices to maintain a safe, efficient, and well-organized work area.

Responsibilities

• Inspect precast and prestressed concrete products to verify compliance with internal quality requirements and Precast Concrete Industry (PCI) standards.

• Conduct and document prepour inspections, ensuring forms, reinforcement, embeds, and materials meet specifications before concrete placement.

• Perform and record postpour inspections to confirm finished products meet dimensional, structural, and visual quality requirements.

• Prepare and maintain detailed variance reports and support bed shutdown processes when quality issues or nonconformities occur.

• Perform and document product repairs in accordance with approved procedures and quality standards.

• Review and work from shop drawings to ensure products align with design specifications and customer requirements.

• Conduct fresh concrete testing, including slump, air content, temperature, and other relevant field tests, and accurately document results.

• Perform hardened concrete testing as required, including compressive strength and other laboratory or field tests, and record data.

• Carry out aggregate moisture tests and sieve analysis to verify material properties and support consistent concrete mix performance.

• Perform initial set tests and other time-related concrete assessments to support production scheduling and quality control.

• Label products with proper identification and visual markings using the established Color Code System.

• Inform the Quality Control Manager promptly of any product nonconformities, equipment issues, or personnel-related concerns affecting quality.

• Collaborate closely with the Quality Control Manager to ensure all quality control processes and procedures are followed and continuously improved.

• Work directly with production personnel to address product quality issues and support consistent quality output.

• Implement and maintain 5S organizational practices and perform housekeeping responsibilities to keep work areas clean, safe, and well-organized.

• Perform all duties in a professional manner, following safety guidelines and company policies.

Essential Skills

• General production and construction skills with hands-on experience in field or plant environments.

• Experience in concrete finishing and quality control within a construction or concrete production setting.

• Familiarity with rebar, carpentry, and concrete construction methods and terminology.

• Ability to accurately read and use a tape measure for dimensions and layout.

• Proficiency in using common hand tools and small power tools safely and effectively.

• Experience with finishing tasks such as concrete finishing, landscaping, sandblasting, and operating grinders.

• Knowledge of precast concrete processes, components, and quality considerations.

• Basic math skills for measurements, calculations, and test result interpretation.

• Basic computer skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel for documentation and reporting.

• Willingness and ability to work outdoors in a dirty, dusty, and weather-exposed environment on a year-round basis.

• Ability to work effectively in a high-performance, production-driven environment with clear quality and output expectations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Six months of experience in the precast or prestressed concrete industry, or in a closely related construction or manufacturing environment, is preferred.

• Experience working with shop drawings or blueprints to verify product specifications.

• Familiarity with 5S or other lean organizational and housekeeping methodologies.

• Comfort working within a large plant environment with established processes and long-tenured team members.

• Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors, quality personnel, and production teams about quality issues and corrective actions.

• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation, testing, and inspection activities.

Work Environment

The standard shift begins at 6:00 a.m., with a typical schedule of 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., though end times can extend to 5:30 p.m. or later depending on workload and project demands. During the busy summer season, workdays often last 9 to 10 hours, and occasional Saturday overtime may be required to meet production goals. The facility operates year-round, with work performed primarily in a dirty and dusty environment, including a yard with a dirt base where product movement generates significant dust. While three concrete beds are partially covered by a building, many tasks-especially detailing-are performed 100% outdoors. Team members must be prepared to work in all weather conditions, including hot, cold, wet, and windy environments. The culture emphasizes high performance and open, straightforward communication in a large plant setting with many seasoned and multi-generational employees, contributing to a family-type atmosphere. Yard crews typically consist of about 6 to 10 team members, supporting close collaboration and teamwork. The dress code requires jeans, steel-toed boots, and weather-appropriate long sleeves, T-shirts, or jackets. Personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, hard hats (based on tenure), hearing protection, and other department-specific PPE is provided to support a safe working environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Des Moines, IA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr.
