HVAC R Mechanic II

Overview We are seeking an HVAC/R Mechanic II to work within the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and installation or replacement of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration systems, and related equipment and components across the Rutgers University campus in Newark, NJ. Responsibilities Operate, maintain, repair, and install HVAC/R equipment, including controls and ancillary systems such as motors, compressors, valves, and dampers. Respond to HVAC/R trouble calls using hand tools, power tools, diagnostic instruments, and testing equipment. Perform routine and preventive maintenance and inspections on HVAC/R systems and associated equipment. Prepare and submit requisitions for materials, work orders, and reports to the Supervisor, Maintenance & Construction. Maintain accurate daily time sheets and records of work performed. Monitor data from power plants, mechanical and control systems, and energy‑management systems, taking action and reporting required actions to supervisors. Work from sketches, plans, and specifications in accordance with HVAC/R standards. Analyze repair or modification situations and recommend appropriate solutions. Service refrigerant equipment and high‑pressure appliances as defined by EPA 40‑CFR. Assist other mechanics, trades helpers, and skilled‑trade mechanics as directed. Adhere to Rutgers compliance standards and stay current with federal, state, and Rutgers regulations. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience: Technical school diploma or equivalent knowledge plus three (3) years of HVAC/R experience in an industrial, educational, or health‑care setting. Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver’s license. Type II EPA Certificate, 40‑CFR, Part 82, Subpart F. Capable of passing and maintaining the New Jersey Pesticide License Testing Requirement. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Sound knowledge of blueprint and schematic reading. Thorough knowledge of local, state, and national HVAC/R codes. Physical Demands: Ability to perform physical labor without restrictions, lift equipment over 50 pounds, and work on roofs, scaffolds, and ladders. Schedule: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday–Friday.
