Position Overview The Riverside County Regional Park and Open‑Space District seeks a Park Ranger to support the Lake Skinner Recreation Area located in Winchester, CA. The position will be filled at either the I or II level. The park offers camping, picnicking, a splash pad, hiking, horseback riding, sailing, and fishing. Work Schedule 4/10 schedule (four 10‑hour shifts per week). Days off vary; the shift schedule may include nights, weekends, and holidays. Responsibilities Explain park policies, rules, regulations, and county ordinances; oversee registration of park visitors, collection of fees, issuance of camping permits, and assignment of public visitors to camping areas. Participate in custodial duties and the maintenance and cleanup of park structures and grounds; work with maintenance personnel on minor construction, repair, and improvement of facilities. Answer public inquiries and complaints about park operations and maintenance. Provide assistance in emergency situations; maintain fire‑prevention standards established by the State Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention and the U.S. Forest Service. Patrol park areas to promote an orderly atmosphere, issue warnings and citations, and coordinate with law‑enforcement agencies as needed. Patrol open‑space, wildlife habitat reserves, and conservation land to ensure compliance with regulations and to maintain signage and access controls. Plan and participate in habitat creation and restoration; assist in the planning of prescribed burns with county, state, and federal fire agencies. Monitor and participate in court referral/work release programs. Maintain records and prepare reports. Uniforms are provided. Progress to Park Ranger II upon meeting qualifications and satisfactory performance. Required Qualifications Background in open‑space reserve, boat operation, forestry, or parks; extensive customer service experience. Prior knowledge of First Aid/CPR, splash pad operation, or animal handling is highly desirable. Minimum Qualifications Park Ranger I: Two years of public interaction with conflict resolution and customer service (or equivalent coursework of 30 semester or 45 quarter units). Within 12 months must possess valid certificates in First Aid, CPR/AED, Basic Water Rescue, and PC 832. Park Ranger II: Either a bachelor’s degree in public administration, park or recreation management, forestry, botany, environmental science, or a closely related field; or three years of relevant park or forest maintenance experience (or equivalent coursework). Must possess valid First Aid and CPR/AED certificates; within six months complete PC 832; within one year obtain a Basic Water Rescue certificate. Additional Requirements for All Levels Valid California Driver’s License, class C. Must take a general abilities assessment prior to consideration. Physical and Environmental Requirements The role requires lifting, carrying, standing, walking, bending, squatting, and high levels of physical activity outdoors in varied weather, on uneven terrain, and around wildlife. Candidates may be exposed to hazardous plants, animals, and environmental conditions such as strong odors from decaying vegetation or refuse.
