Clinical Lab Assistant - Anatomical Pathology - Kings Hwy

This role performs a variety of laboratory functions that support the department. The key responsibilities include phlebotomy; specimen receiving and processing into the Laboratory Information System (LIS); centrifugation; aliquoting, labeling, and distribution of specimens to the appropriate test sites; performing waived and moderately complex procedures; maintaining and monitoring laboratory equipment; and executing appropriate quality control measures.

Responsibilities

• Perform specimen collection and processing.
• Process laboratory orders and set up patient testing.
• Document and carry out quality control procedures.
• Order, inventory, and restock laboratory supplies.
• Adapt communication style and behavior to meet the needs of diverse patient populations, including privacy considerations and clear explanation of procedures.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, accreditation standards, and other compliance requirements related to laboratory work.
• Report any unethical or questionable conduct, patient or employee safety, or privacy concerns immediately.
• Perform other related duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent (preferred: formal phlebotomy training).
• Experience: Experience working in a controlled environment with safety protocols for handling chemicals, body fluids, and bloodborne pathogens; preferred: 1 year of hospital‑based phlebotomy experience.
• Certification: Current license as a Laboratory Assistant or Laboratory Assistant Trainee in the state of practice. (The trainee license remains valid for 180 days from hire, after which a Louisiana Laboratory Assistant license must be obtained.)
• Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Computer proficiency for data entry and retrieval; familiarity with Windows‑style applications and role‑specific software.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and analytical skills.
  • Judgment to identify and solve problems and handle difficult situations.
  • Self‑directed and able to work independently.
  • Basic math skills for routine calculations.
  • Stress management to maintain a professional atmosphere and provide quality service.

Physical & Environmental Demands

The position requires medium to heavy activity, including lifting up to 30 lbs., bending, reaching, and stooping. Employees work at a counter/bench approximately 2½‑3½ ft. high. The work includes exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, and potential communicable diseases, as well as hazardous medications and waste. Medical monitoring and protective equipment are required per institutional protocols.
