Delicatessen Department Manager

$17 - $21.25 per hour

Job Title Delicatessen Manager Department Delicatessen Employment Type FLSA: Non-Exempt General Function As a Delicatessen Manager, this position will be responsible for setting the department standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, professional appearance and overall profitability. You will coordinate the delivery of the freshest and best quality product at a competitive retail price and ensure a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service to customers and team members. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Maintain a positive attitude and create an atmosphere of friendliness and fun through flexibility and teamwork. Encourage employees to greet and speak to customers, providing prompt, courteous, and efficient service. Set the department standards for customer service, employee relations, cleanliness, sanitation, professional appearance, and overall profitability. Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner, whether in the employee’s department or elsewhere in the store. Learn customers’ names and address them by name whenever possible. Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach items, loading/unloading heavy items, passing along suggestions or requests, and performing any tasks that enhance the shopping experience. Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to callers, including taking product orders. Recruit, hire, train, supervise, discipline, and evaluate all department employees. Determine department goals with the store director. Determine weekly work schedule and establish a daily work plan for the department. Inspect signage and displays for quality and quantity of merchandise and order product for replenishment. Communicate with employees regarding sales and ideas. Handle and satisfy customer issues. Figure retail pricing and ensure correct pricing. Extend invoices, post invoices, and oversee department bookkeeping procedures. Analyze weekly and monthly sales and trends, prepare ad projections, and write ads. Conduct inventory of the department. Plan displays, promotions, and determine pre‑orders. Ensure proper temperatures and storage procedures are maintained to guarantee freshness and control shrinkage of product. Understand and troubleshoot equipment and ensure maintenance is performed. Maintain strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress. Adhere to company policies and individual store guidelines. Report to work when scheduled and on time. Secondary Duties and Responsibilities Ensure pricing is competitive in the market area. Attend meetings and seminars and participate in continuing education. Unload trucks, check-in delivered merchandise, and place items in appropriate storage areas. Fill displays and work in the sales area. Perform departmental duties as needed. Assist in other areas of the store as needed. Perform other job‑related duties and special projects as required. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics Problem‑solving with variable situations and limited standardization. Interpret written instructions and technical manuals. Do arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages. Compose original correspondence. Interview job applicants, follow technical manuals, and interact with people extensively. Education and Experience High school equivalent experience and over one year of related work experience. Physical Requirements Exert up to 100 pounds occasionally; up to 50 pounds frequently; up to 10 pounds constantly. Visual acuity from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet, with or without correction. Perform climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Working Conditions Exposed to dust, noise, equipment movement hazards, and electrical shock daily. Occasional exposure to temperature extremes and cleaning chemicals/solvents. Fast‑paced environment. Equipment Used to Perform Job Telephone, fax, copier, intercom system, computer, calculator, C.A.R.S. reordering system. Kitchen utensils, wrapping machine, garbage disposal, trash compactor, cardboard compactor, box cutter, slicer, scales. Delivery van, pallet jack, hot wrapper, knives. Financial Responsibility Responsible for company assets, including equipment and merchandise. Contacts Daily contact with customers, employees, suppliers/vendors, and the general public. Occasional contact with local, federal, or state regulatory agencies regarding inspections. Confidentiality Access to confidential information including employee compensation, monthly results, quarterly inventory reports, sales and profit sheets, and warehouse pricing.
