These positions may be located in Tumwater, Seattle, Tacoma or Spokane, Washington, and are represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE). Paralegal 4 Salary Range 62: $73,284 - $98,520 (Effective 7/1/2025) | $74,748 - $100,488 (Effective 7/1/2026). The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Stipends and Pay Adjustments Note : Paralegal 4s assigned to work within King County receive a 5 % premium in addition to their base pay under Article 42.10B (Salary Adjustments) for recruitment and retention purposes. If a 5 % premium or another compensation adjustment achieving a comparable pay differential is later incorporated into the WFSE GG CBA for King County Paralegal 4 positions, this temporary premium under Article 42.10B will be discontinued. Incumbents assigned to our Seattle office location receive an additional 5 % King County Location Pay stipend. Incumbents assigned to a position designated as requiring dual language skills will receive a 5 % Dual Language Requirement Pay stipend. About the Torts Division The Torts Division is the largest division within the Attorney General’s Office and is responsible for defending tort claims and lawsuits brought against Washington State agencies, officers, and employees. Its work spans a wide range of complex and impactful legal issues, including highway design, release and supervision of offenders, injuries on state property, medical malpractice, employment disputes, childcare and custody matters, auto accidents, maritime injuries, false arrests, and allegations of excessive force. In addition to litigation, the Division provides legal and risk‑management guidance to the Office of Financial Management and state agencies on tort‑related matters. Duties and Essential Functions of a Paralegal 4 The Torts Division of the Washington State Attorney General’s Office is seeking a highly skilled and experienced paralegal to serve in a key leadership role supporting complex, high impact litigation in a high‑pressure legal environment. This position serves as the supervisor for the Division’s Paralegal 3s and their supervisees, serves as the lead paralegal on some of the AGO’s most complex and high‑impact tort cases, provides discovery support and guidance on complex cases in coordination with other paralegals, and provides trial training and support. What You Will Do Provide leadership and supervision to the Division’s Trial Team Paralegal 3s. Serve as lead paralegal on the most complex and high impact litigation. Serve as discovery and database manager in high volume discovery cases in coordination with other paralegals. Serve as trainer and second chair on complex trials. Provide training, technology and professional development through collaboration with paralegals within the Division. Work on the most complex, high‑profile torts litigation in the State. Ideal Candidate We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced paralegal competent in the areas of complex discovery, trial, training and supervision. The ideal candidate would thrive in complex litigation environments and collaborate well with others to provide guidance and oversight. Combination of seven years of experience* through: Paralegal certification Two‑year paralegal degree Paralegal plus (or nine‑month paralegal, post‑BA) certification Paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney One year experience as a Paralegal 3 in Washington State Service *You may have gained applicable paraprofessional experience through previous Paralegal or Legal Assistant work. Examples of paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney: Preparing legal pleadings and legal correspondence Ensuring and verifying timely and proper service of legal documents Calculating, verifying, and calendaring critical events and other dates Managing case documents, files and exhibits Tracking and organizing discovery documents Researching legal issues and verifying legal citations and references for accuracy Skills & Abilities Advanced litigation skills including trial experience and high‑volume complex discovery Strong leadership and supervisory skills including ability to mentor staff and support professional development Strong organizational and project management skills to coordinate large volumes of information and manage competing demands Strong litigation technology skills including experience with e‑discovery platforms, document databases and large‑scale document review Ability to evaluate and determine workload needs and self‑assign and monitor Ability to manage complex litigation support projects with minimal supervision Ability to prioritize work and collaborate effectively About the Washington State Office of the Attorney General The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) touches the lives of every resident in this state.
