Description: The competent nurse practices independently in a clinical setting. Demonstrates an awareness of all relevant aspects of a situation. Provides routine and complex care with the ability to achieve long-range goals or plans. Continuously develops the ability to cope with and manage contingencies in clinical nursing. Makes appropriate assignments and delegates to other care providers as a means to help manage the clinical situation. Meets expectations of applicable competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders. Consistent with the nursing scope and standards of practice, provides nursing care utilizing the nursing process. Includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation for assigned patients. Addresses increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families. Utilizes appropriate protocols to administer medications and treatments. Monitors for side effects and effectiveness of prescribed treatments. Documents patient history, symptoms, medications, and care provided. Assesses learning needs and provides education to patients, family members, and caregivers. Identifies issues and resources relevant to patient care.
