Mechanical Engineer (Engineer IV) Zing Recruiting, in partnership with a leading public agency in the Fairfax, VA area, is seeking a Mechanical Engineer (Engineer IV) to join their team. Location: Fairfax, VA Department: Facilities Management Salary Range: Min: $41.84/hr, Max: $69.73/hr Type: Contract Mechanical Engineer Summary Provides senior level leadership and is responsible for the overall development and management of large scale and/or multiple complex capital and non‑capital projects for and in occupied spaces or development and management of cross‑functional capital renewal projects for and in occupied spaces that require working with all department and/or county levels and groups specific to the project design and implementation to address specific business needs. Works under the guidance and general direction of the project coordinator (principal engineer) and/or division director of design, engineering and construction. Responsibilities Lead design projects and resolve construction issues as the primary representative. Establish project objectives and performance standards; perform difficult professional engineering work in managing and participating in the design, installation, operation and maintenance of HVAC, building automation systems (BAS), and plumbing equipment and systems (new, renovation and renewal). Review and analyze plans and specifications for HVAC and plumbing features and ensure compliance with code requirements. Serve as the department subject matter expert and as subject matter expert to multiple other county departments and agencies. As a registered professional engineer, leverage a strong technical background, excellence in design, attention to detail and quality control to perform and review mechanical engineering calculations, reports, construction drawings, specifications, schedules and budgets for commercial building mechanical, plumbing systems, and building automation systems. Sign and seal own work product as a licensed professional mechanical engineer. Ensure the timely completion of projects assigned consistent with quality standards of the Facilities Management Department (FMD) and industry standards, as well as ensuring projects are financially and operationally viable and completed cost‑efficiently. Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related area, or equivalent combination of education, training, and recent, relevant industry experience is required. Minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in electrical engineering. Licenses & Certifications Required Valid Driver’s License Professional Engineer (PE) License Preferred Valid professional mechanical engineer license in the state of Virginia. Experience as the lead mechanical P.E. directly responsible and accountable for the design and sealing of commercial building mechanical and plumbing systems projects. 5+ years as a lead mechanical P.E. directly responsible and accountable for the design of commercial building HVAC, building automation and plumbing design, construction and energy management. 3 years as the lead mechanical P.E., in authoring and producing design and specification of HVAC, building automation system, and plumbing systems for commercial mission critical buildings. Experience as a lead mechanical P.E. responsible for designing and construction of life cycle mechanical systems and component replacement in occupied mission critical commercial buildings. Strong background in energy management informing, validating and optimizing commercial building mechanical, automation and plumbing system design and operation. Experience managing projects valued at least $500,000. Strong contract management skills. Strong staff management skills. Skills & Attributes Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent verbal and written communication. Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously. Comfortable working in both office and active construction site environments. Physical Requirements Ability to climb ladders, access tight spaces, crawl, reach, lift 25 lbs, push 25 lbs, etc. Ability to work with extended exposure to outside environments including harsh weather as well as inside environments of extreme heat and cold. Dexterity to use hand tools. Must be able to communicate by phone. Must drive a motor vehicle. Vision to see detail drawings, construction and discern color.
