Mechanical Assembler / Wire & Cable Assembler / Quality Tester - Sorrento Valley - $25/hr-$26/hr

Job Description

This role combines mechanical assembly, wire and cable harness assembly, and hands-on quality inspection and testing of electro-mechanical subassemblies and devices. You will build modules and PCBAs by following detailed computer-based work instructions, document each step in a manufacturing execution system, and perform firmware installation, functional testing, and troubleshooting to ensure every product meets stringent quality standards.

Responsibilities

• Assemble electro-mechanical subassemblies, modules, and PCBAs by following detailed work instructions in the manufacturing execution system (MES).
• Use the shop order system (42Q) daily to open work instructions, track tasks, and document each step of the manufacturing process, creating an accurate electronic device history record.
• Perform mechanical and electrical assembly work, including connecting wires and harnesses to modules and PCBAs by hand using appropriate tools.
• Work with hand and small power tools such as screwdrivers, wire strippers, crimpers, wrenches, torque wrenches, needle nose pliers, and other assembly tools in a safe and precise manner.
• Install firmware onto PCBAs by opening the required program on a laptop, running scripts to upload firmware, and verifying successful installation.
• Conduct functional testing of devices by selecting the appropriate test area, entering test codes via keyboard, running scripts, and monitoring test results to confirm proper operation.
• Attach cables to subassemblies, load test programs, and run scripts to perform comprehensive testing of assembled units.
• Document verification steps in the MES by selecting the area to be verified, entering system-generated numbers, and recording pass/fail results accurately.
• Troubleshoot failures identified by the testing software, investigate root causes, and perform necessary corrections and repairs to bring units into compliance.
• Follow all build plans and work instructions exactly, with no deviation from prescribed processes or procedures.
• Collaborate closely with technicians and team members during training and ongoing production to complete build plans and meet production goals.
• Participate in a daily 7:00 AM stand-up meeting to receive work assignments, review build plans, and align on team objectives.
• Communicate clearly with team members and leaders about issues, defects, and troubleshooting steps taken during the manufacturing and testing process.
• Maintain a strong focus on quality, accuracy, and consistency in all assembly, testing, and documentation activities.
• Adhere to ESD and safety requirements at all times, including proper use of lab coats, safety glasses, and other protective measures.
• Support continuous improvement by sharing observations from testing and troubleshooting activities and collaborating on process refinements.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience in mechanical assembly of electro-mechanical subassemblies, modules, or devices.
• Hands-on experience with wire harness assembly, wiring, crimping, and repair of electrical connections.
• Demonstrated background in testing and troubleshooting devices in previous roles, including a clear, structured troubleshooting process.
• Ability to use hand and small power tools proficiently, including screwdrivers, wire strippers, crimpers, wrenches, torque wrenches, needle nose pliers, and similar tools.
• Strong computer proficiency, including the ability to work on a computer throughout the day and navigate multiple software programs and windows.
• Experience entering data into a manufacturing execution system or shop order system (such as 42Q) and tracking work within that system.
• Ability to follow detailed, computer-based work instructions precisely, with no deviation from build plans.
• Comfort using email and collaboration tools such as Outlook and Microsoft Teams on a daily basis.
• background in electronics, including familiarity with testing concepts, basic electronic components, and the use of tools such as an oscilloscope.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly describe troubleshooting steps, defects found, and interactions with team leaders.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-focused environment and contribute to shared build plans and goals.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Previous experience working in an electro-mechanical manufacturing or assembly environment with subassembly work.
• Experience with manufacturing execution systems, particularly 42Q, or similar shop floor tracking tools.
• Exposure to firmware installation processes, including running scripts to upload firmware to PCBAs.
• Experience performing functional testing of electronic or electro-mechanical devices using computer-based test programs.
• Familiarity with documenting device history and test results in electronic systems.
• Team-oriented mindset and the ability to work closely with others in a tight, collaborative environment.
• Comfort working with technicians and supervisors for guidance, training, and development.
• Ability to adapt to different work areas, including transitioning to new areas after initial training periods.
• Strong attention to detail and a disciplined approach to following standardized work processes and build plans.

Work Environment

The role is based in an ESD-controlled environment where you will work closely with a tight-knit team to achieve build plans and production goals. You will wear lab coats and safety glasses as part of the standard dress code and follow established safety and ESD protocols at all times. The workday begins with a 7:00 AM stand-up meeting to assign tasks and align on priorities. The regular schedule runs Monday to Friday from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM. During the first two months, you will receive structured training by partnering with a technician, shadowing their work, and receiving ongoing coaching and guidance. After approximately three months, you will transition to another area, broadening your experience. The environment is highly collaborative, with team members working in close proximity and relying on each other to follow build plans precisely and maintain high quality standards.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Diego, CA.

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $26.00/hr.
