HVAC Mechanic

Position Title HVAC Mechanic Employment Type and Location Regular, full‑time. Remote and hybrid positions available for applicants in eligible states. Compensation Hourly wage: $27.20 – $34.00. Salary offers are determined by experience, internal equity, and organizational budget. Anticipated start date: Wednesday, March 25, 2026. Responsibilities Assist in the installation, operation, service, and repair of light commercial heat pump and air conditioning systems and other HVAC equipment such as refrigerators, fume hoods, window units, exhaust ventilators, coolers, deep freezers, and unit ventilators. Assist in the operation, service, and repair of pneumatic, electric, or electronic control systems on HVAC systems. Regulate and monitor air handling equipment, compressors, cooling tower fans, and related support equipment as prescribed by operating procedures. Perform preventive maintenance tasks on a variety of HVAC equipment, including replacing filters, motors, and control devices. Perform service tasks such as adding refrigerant, lubricating, adjusting and replacing compressors and expansion devices, repairing pumps, cleaning out cooling towers, and repacking valve glands and pump seals. Install and reinstall wiring and controls to connect components and controls to electrical power sources at low line voltage. Service and repair traps, flash tanks, piping, control valves, condensate pumps, and meters on steam systems. Perform mechanical joining of piping using soldering, brazing, and gas welding techniques. Insulate piping and mechanical equipment such as heat exchangers and associated subsystems, and repair air‑duct insulation. Operate and maintain tools, power tools, and equipment of the trade or area where assigned. Clean work area upon completion of assignments. Assist with campus‑wide snow/ice removal as directed. Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor, including required training. Required Experience and Education Vocational or technical training required. Minimum of 1–3 years of related experience in HVAC installation, repair, and maintenance. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of air‑conditioning and refrigeration principles, installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC equipment. Knowledge of refrigerant types, environmental impact, gas reclamation procedures, and HVAC equipment. Knowledge of OSHA regulations, National Electric Code, and basic mathematics for applying fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions. Familiarity with plumbing, steam fitting, and electrical trades related to HVAC systems. Skill in welding, brazing, soldering, interpreting blueprints, schematics, drawings, and specifications. Ability to read and explain manufacturer recommendations regarding scheduled and preventive maintenance, servicing, and operation. Ability to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and on‑call duty per university procedures. Successful completion of driver’s clearance process. Physical and Environmental Demands Regular physical tasks: walking over uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, confined‑space entry, lifting or carrying 20–50 pounds, occasional >100 pounds. Exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, cold, heat, noise, vibrations, and dampness. Work may involve dangerous equipment and machinery, requiring protective gear such as earplugs, hard hats, masks, gloves, insulated clothing, boots, and coats.
