Principal Environmental Planner – About the Position Join an agency committed to creating a healthy breathing environment for every Bay Area resident while protecting and improving public health, air quality, and the global climate. The Air District is hiring one full‑time, represented Principal Environmental Planner in the Planning and Climate Protection Division. Responsibilities Lead and contribute to the successful preparation and implementation of community‑scale air quality plans in partnership with Air District staff, community members, partner organizations, local governments, the California Air Resources Board, and other state agencies. Support the development and implementation of regional‑based plans and assist local governments to advance health‑protective and equitable air quality and climate plans and policies. Lead and manage interdisciplinary projects that research, analyze issues, and craft high‑impact recommendations to support community and Air District decision making. Deliver presentations and develop community‑centered materials, including summaries, plan documents, and visualizations of geospatial environmental, health, and socioeconomic data. Represent the District and respond to inquiries from governmental officials, consultants, and the public regarding environmental planning issues. Coordinate the preparation, review, and editing of environmental impact assessment documents from other agencies; prepare District Lead Agency documents in accordance with relevant guidelines. Direct the preparation of non‑attainment area plans related to assigned work. Analyze issues, prepare reports and recommendations related to land use, regional development, transportation planning, and programming, providing inputs into planned development’s impact on air quality. Confere with personnel from other divisions and agencies, meet with community organizations, and coordinate assigned work to encourage cooperative action. Qualifications Graduation from a college or university with a master’s or professional degree in regional, urban, or environmental planning or a closely related field. At least four years of professional environmental planning experience; additional relevant experience may substitute for the graduate degree. Strong leadership, communication, project management, and analytical skills. In-depth knowledge of land use, transportation, air quality, equity, and environmental justice, including methods for developing environmental planning programs and applying statistical and mathematical concepts to the planning process. Experience interpreting and applying laws, policies, regulations, maps, site plans, and statistical data. Ability to make persuasive presentations and prepare clear, concise technical documents. Experience facilitating community and stakeholder meetings and working with low‑income communities of color and overburdened communities. Education and Experience Equivalent to graduation with a graduate degree in regional, urban, or environmental planning or a closely related field, with four years of professional environmental planning experience. Relevant experience may substitute for the graduate degree. Hybrid Work Schedule The Air District offers a schedule that meets the needs of staff and the communities served. Remote hours may be available depending on assignment.
