Diesel Mechanic

Mechanic

The mechanic is responsible for inspecting, repairing and maintaining district vehicles and small engines using various diagnostic and repair equipment and factory manuals. Duties may also include performing minor body repair.

Essential Functions

• Inspect, repair and maintain functional parts of district vehicles (such as trucks, buses and passenger cars) and small engines.
• Inspect defective equipment and diagnose malfunctions using motor analyzers, pressure gauges, chassis charts and factory manuals.
• Disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, alternators, transmissions, clutches and rear-ends.
• Adjust brakes and align wheels.
• Reassemble equipment and lubricate equipment and machinery.
• Perform minor body repair.
• Perform welding, burning and brazing as necessary.
• Perform roadside vehicle repair.
• Determine usefulness of worn parts and recommend disposition.
• Maintain efficient related records.
• Road test vehicles and act as an emergency back-up bus driver.
• Maintain regular attendance; adhere to board policy and the mutually bargained leave and attendance terms as stated in the collective bargaining agreement.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience, ability and demonstrated aptitude for successful completion of responsibilities listed.
• Current first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillator (AED) certification required.
• Journey level status as an automotive mechanic OR completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an automotive mechanic OR 4 years successful, applicable work experience.
• School bus experience preferred.
• Valid Washington State Driver's License.
• Possess or ability to obtain Washington State School Bus Driver authorization.
• Knowledge of and skill in efficient record keeping.
• Cultural Competency; ability to effectively work with diverse populations.

Working Conditions

Must be able to talk; use fingers, hands and arms, and listen carefully and focus while filtering out normal shop noise. Dexterity of fingers and hands as required in operating computer keyboard.

Exposure to frequent interruptions; precision, accuracy and the ability to visually concentrate on details required. Work may be performed around and under heavy equipment and vehicles that requires constant safety awareness. Required to lift, move and position heavy objects in excess of 50 pounds. May be required to stand for long periods and exposed to high noise levels from vehicles, equipment and machinery. Required to take precautions to avoid exposure to fumes, noise, dirt, and grease and chemical hazards, required to work outdoors in inclement weather.
