What You Will Do as a Staff Accountant Manage recurring bookkeeping and accounting responsibilities for an assigned portfolio of clients Enter, categorize, and review bank, credit card, payroll, loan, and other financial transactions as needed Prepare journal entries and record appropriate adjustments to client accounts Reconcile and review bank, credit card, loan, payroll, and balance sheet accounts Review work completed by Junior Accountants and provide clear, constructive feedback Review general ledgers and financial statements for unusual balances, classification issues, incomplete transactions, reconciliation differences, and missing documentation Prepare and review monthly and periodic financial reports Identify accounting issues, research potential solutions, and make appropriate corrections Prepare clear review notes and prepare and review federal and state payroll tax returns, including Forms 941, 940, and applicable state filings Prepare and review year-end payroll reporting, including Forms W-2 and W-3 Prepare and review state and local sales tax returns Reconcile taxable sales, sales tax collected, sales tax payable, and amounts reported Assist with sales tax and payroll account registrations and related compliance matters Maintain accurate, complete, and organized workpapers and supporting documentation Manage recurring accounting and filing deadlines across assigned clients Communicate directly with clients to request information, resolve outstanding items, answer routine questions, and provide progress updates Proactively identify potential accounting, payroll, sales tax, or process concerns Support the training and development of Junior Accountants Follow and reinforce SMG's accounting, documentation, and client-service standards Assist managers with special projects and other client-service responsibilities as needed Qualifications and attributes you will need Bachelor's or master's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA license is preferred. Minimum of 2-3 years of accounting/bookkeeping experience, with proficiency in QuickBooks.
