Arizona State Director

Role Description

The VoteRiders Arizona State Director leads all VoteRiders’ programming in the state and grows our impact there. This individual works closely with VoteRiders’ National Field Director, Department Directors, Deputy Directors, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Executive Officer/Executive Director to plan, manage, and execute the Arizona field programs. The Arizona State Director will lead overall state programming and partnership work, serving as the primary contact for many state-based partners in Arizona, including voter engagement organizations and direct service providers that serve communities disproportionately impacted by voter ID laws.

VoteRiders does not maintain a physical office, but candidates must be physically based in or willing to relocate to the state of Arizona, and be able to travel regularly within the state, to be considered for this position. While candidates from across Arizona will be considered, we have a preference for candidates based in or willing to relocate to Phoenix. The Arizona State Director reports to our National Field Director. This position currently directly supervises one full-time staff member, the Arizona State Organizer. This position may also require you to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends. This position is funded through December 2026, with the possibility of an extension.

Primary Responsibilities

• Partner Outreach and Relationship Management:
  • Develop and implement a state-specific strategic plan for partner organization outreach and engagement.
  • Identify, establish, maintain, and deepen meaningful partnerships with statewide and local organizations.
  • Leverage relationships with Arizona partners for the benefit of other VoteRiders programs.
• Policy Monitoring and Engagement:
  • Monitor in-state legislative developments and initiatives related to voting rights and voter ID laws.
  • Identify strategic ways for VoteRiders to engage in nonpartisan voter ID-related policy and advocacy activities.
• Voter, Community, and Volunteer Engagement:
  • Organize and join in-state virtual and in-person community events to engage voters and at-risk communities.
  • Proactively offer and respond to voter ID information and assistance needs of Arizona voters.
  • Assist in the recruitment, training, and oversight of a diverse group of VoteRiders volunteers.
• Reporting, Staff, and Program Management:
  • Lead and maintain organizational resource development and reporting efforts for Arizona field programs.
  • Directly supervise, support, and mentor the Arizona State Organizer.
  • Work with the development department for state-specific grant proposals and reporting.
  • Represent VoteRiders externally, including with partners, the media, and other stakeholders.
  • Draft, provide input into, and monitor annual state budget.
• Organizational Stewardship:
  • Tend to internal administrative items (e.g., emails/Slack, timekeeping, expenses, HR).
  • Actively participate in internal activities (i.e., full team meetings, brainstorms, debriefs).
  • Engage in organizational and team-wide professional development/learning opportunities.
  • Meeting planning and facilitation.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

• Lives in (or willing to relocate immediately to) Arizona.
• At least 6 years of relevant experience in a similar role, including community organizing experience.
• Proven track record in building strong and sustainable collaborative relationships.
• Managerial skills and at least 2 years of managerial experience.
• Exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to manage details and resourcefully solve problems.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills.
• Experience and ability to work with diverse and at-risk communities.
• Regular access to a reliable computer, internet signal, and cellphone.
• Strong computer skills, including Slack, Microsoft Suite, and Google Suite.
• Willing to travel within Arizona with access to reliable transportation.
• Willing to work unconventional hours, such as evenings and weekends.

Preferred/Plus

• Spanish or additional relevant language skills.
• Experience with VAN, Mobilize, and/or EveryAction.
• Existing relationships with Arizona democracy, direct service, and/or community organizations.
• Experience working within the political arena and/or campaigns.
• Experience with digital storytelling methods.
• Experience drafting data-driven reports for grant tracking and stakeholders.
