HPC Software Engineer

Salary: $79,000 - 120,000 per year Requirements:

• We require a bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline.
• An advanced degree is advantageous, with a Ph.D. preferred for research-focused work.
• We require at least three years of relevant professional experience.
• We need strong proficiency in Python and modern C++.
• We value experience with parallel programming models and performance profiling tools.
• We look for familiarity with Linux development environments, version control, build systems, and automated testing.
• We require the ability to communicate effectively with technical and scientific collaborators.
• We prefer candidates with demonstrated experience developing scientific or numerical software for HPC environments.
• We prefer experience with workflow orchestration tools, HPC schedulers, and large-scale data management or parallel I/O libraries.
• We value background knowledge in numerical methods, computational physics, signal processing, or related scientific areas.
• We prefer familiarity with container technologies, reproducible research practices, Agile methods, and end-to-end product delivery.
• Observatory employees must be authorized to work in the United States.

• We design, develop, optimize, and maintain scientific applications and data-processing software for large-scale HPC systems.
• We prototype, benchmark, profile, and refine mission-critical HPC software in collaboration with external computing partners.
• We build high-performance scientific software in C++ and Python, including numerical algorithms, analysis pipelines, and simulation components.
• We implement scalable solutions using modern parallel programming approaches.
• We create Python interfaces, bindings, and workflow tools around high-performance C++ codebases.
• We produce modular, maintainable, and well-tested software following engineering best practices.
• We improve application performance across multi-core and distributed-memory systems by tuning algorithms, memory usage, I/O, and data movement.
• We collaborate with HPC system engineers to adapt software for specific architectures.
• We develop automated scientific workflows for large-scale simulations, experiments, and data-processing tasks.
• We integrate software with HPC schedulers, container platforms, and workflow engines.
• We implement strategies for data ingestion, transformation, and storage at multi-terabyte to petabyte scale.
