The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) enforces criminal law to detect and deter crime within the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC). Through systematic investigative techniques, position plans and conducts criminal and administrative investigations, prepares legal documents, reports, warrants and affidavits. Responsibilities Conduct investigations of offender and employee misconduct to include violations of state statutes, federal laws and/or administrative regulations. Investigations may include Title VII discrimination and sexual harassment complaints, use of force allegations, staff and offender relationships and other allegations of significant employee misconduct. Coordinate facility drug interdictions and provide matrix supervision of assigned facility staff. Interview suspects, victims, witnesses, and confidential sources. Independently investigate crimes in a prison facility. As lead investigator/team leader, direct field investigations, determine resources needed, assign tasks to investigative personnel and law enforcement officers. Review findings, prepare investigative reports and legal documentation for presentation to appointing authorities and prosecuting agencies. Conduct surveillance and supervise and/or participate in undercover operations, and assist other agencies in CDOC‑related cases and intelligence gathering. Analyze complaints, determine authenticity and validate essential elements constituting a crime under Colorado statutes. Review and analyze documents, statements and reports to identify witnesses, victims and suspects. Write search and arrest affidavits to secure warrants and execute arrest and search warrants. Obtain court orders for the collection of non‑testimonial evidence and other related seizures. Inventory and secure items seized during search warrants and routine crime‑scene evidence collection, creating exhibits for court. Testify in court (administrative and personnel hearings, depositions, etc.). Assign other investigative tasks such as assistance to other divisions, fugitive operations, background investigations, interdiction operations and other duties normally assigned to the Special Operations Divisions. May be responsible for training and leading other OIG staff and field investigators. May be utilized in K9 investigations. Other duties as needed. Important Information About This Position Work as a lead investigator, a support investigator, and as an independent investigator depending on the situation. Must pass a law‑enforcement background investigation, integrity interview and psychological evaluation. Position requires 24/7 on‑call duty year‑round to any correctional facility in Colorado. Applicant must permanently reside within one‑hour drive time of the assigned location. Requires a flexible schedule and extensive travel for emergency situations and team operations. Minimum Qualifications Eight (8) years of full‑time professional investigative criminal‑case experience, including felony drug investigations, felony assault investigations and internal affairs investigations: interviewing suspects, collecting and processing evidence, writing and executing warrants, and testifying in hearings and trials. OR a combination of related education, formal apprenticeship, certification or relevant investigative experience equal to eight (8) years. Applicants must possess a valid/active Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification at the time of application. A copy of the current POST Certificate must be submitted. No substitution for the POST requirement. Required Competencies Extensive experience conducting independent criminal and/or administrative investigations with precise attention to detail. Working knowledge of federal, state and local statutes, rules and regulations related to criminal and administrative investigation. Extensive knowledge of Colorado Criminal Law. Broad experience conducting complex criminal investigations. Self‑directed and strong initiative. Excellent written and oral communication; public speaking skills. Exceptional interpersonal/customer service skills and respect for diversity. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Significant conflict resolution skills. Highly effective critical thinking/decision‑making/complex problem‑solving skills. Organizing, planning and prioritizing skills. Multitasking and flexibility. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse roles. Negotiation and consensus building skills. Clear and accurate report writing. Strong interview and interrogation skills. Self‑control, emotional resilience and stress tolerance in violent or high‑stakes situations. Ability to read, comprehend and communicate fluently in English. Ability to create accessible documents following plain language guidelines. Preferred Qualifications Experience in drug investigations within a corrections organization. Professional canine handling experience in a corrections, law enforcement or military organization. Gang‑related investigations experience. Intelligence gathering or intelligence‑led policing experience. Multim‑agency investigation experience. Institutional/Detention investigations experience. Professional Standards or Internal Affairs investigation experience. Bilingual proficiency. Conditions of Employment Must be 21 years of age. Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record. Hold a high school diploma or GED. Have no felony convictions and meet CDOC’s conduct requirements. Must be legally eligible to work in the United States. Successfully pass the six‑week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including written and practical exams in Defensive Tactics. Meet physical requirements for defensive tactics and operational duties.
