Please click here to learn more about our locations. Job Description Job Overview Shriners Children’s Northern California is seeking a full-time pediatric hand surgeon to join our team. Candidates should be board certified/eligible in orthopedic surgery and have successfully completed a fellowship in hand & upper extremity surgery. Successful candidates should have significant experience and interest in caring for pediatric patients, and ideally a special interest in those with brachial plexus birth injuries. This surgeon will work primarily at Shriners Children’s Hospital Northern California (SCHNC), with academic affiliation and possible clinical duties at University of California at Davis (UCD) Medical Center. Schedule is Monday through Friday days with expectations for 5 nights and 2 weekends coverage per quarter. Our upper extremity services include the care of congenital malformations, brachial plexus birth palsy, fractures and soft tissue injuries, post-traumatic deformities, and surgical reconstruction for children with upper extremity cerebral palsy, tetraplegia, and burns. Our hand service is supported by a care manager, a physician assistant, and a team of occupational and hand therapists. Regionally, SCHNC and UCD health systems bring multiple specialists together to support the treatment for complex pediatric hand. Opportunities exist to work with annually with Hand Surgery fellows from 2 training programs, in addition to a Pediatric Hand and Upper Extremity Fellow at SCHNC, orthopedic residents from 3 training programs, plastic surgery residents from UCD, and medical students. Key Responsibilities Perform comprehensive clinical assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and treatment planning for pediatric patients with upper‑extremity and musculoskeletal conditions, with a focused emphasis on pediatric hand and upper‑limb surgery. This includes congenital and acquired disorders such as brachial plexus birth injuries, congenital hand differences, limb deformities, fractures, tendon and nerve injuries, and growth‑related abnormalities affecting hand and arm function. Provide surgical and non-surgical management based on current standards of care, evidence-based practices, and patient-specific considerations. Participate in inpatient and/or outpatient care, including preoperative and postoperative management, consultations, and discharge planning. Perform operative procedures in accordance with institutional protocols and safety standards. Collaborate with pediatricians, physiatrists, physical therapists, anesthesiologists, and other subspecialists in the coordinated care of patients. Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic health record system in compliance with legal, regulatory, and institutional requirements. Participate in shared call coverage, hospital rounds, and trauma response as assigned. Contribute to departmental quality improvement, peer review, and clinical governance processes. May participate in medical education, research, and scholarly activities depending on institutional affiliation or department expectations. Maintain accountability for meeting established productivity benchmarks (e.g. wRVUS), quality metrics, and institutional performance standards Ensure time is allocated in accordance with assigned clinical, surgical, administrative, and academic expectations. Required Qualifications Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school Must have successfully completed an ACGME accredited orthopedic surgery residency program Must have completed relevant fellowship training in Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery. Board certification or eligibility in Orthopedic Surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS) Must possess eligibility for active and unrestricted medical licensure in the state of practice Must possess eligibility for active DEA Must possess Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification Credentialing and privileging by the medical staff in accordance with hospital bylaws Experience treating pediatric hand patients, particularly brachial plexus birth injuries Comprehensive knowledge of pediatric orthopedic surgical techniques, growth and development, and musculoskeletal conditions unique to children. Proficiency in operative planning, surgical execution, and perioperative management in pediatric populations. Familiarity with pediatric imaging, casting, bracing, and non-operative treatment protocols. Effective communication and counseling skills for engaging with pediatric patients and their families. Ability to function in a multidisciplinary environment and manage complex care scenarios. Competency in use of electronic medical record systems, documentation standards, and clinical decision support tools. Preferred Qualifications Successful completion of Pediatric Hand and Upper Extremity fellowship The pay range for this position is $506,170.08 - $1,046,084.83. Compensation is determined based on years of relevant experience and departmental equity.
