POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Provides direct supervision, leadership, instruction and motivation for Lifeguards. The Aquatics Coordinator will be responsible for assisting the Aquatic Director in Department supervision of Aquatic Staff. They will be responsible for scheduling, training and the professional development of Lifeguards, Swim Instructors and other program staff. They will assist in all aspects of pool operations. This position will be required to work 2-3 evenings per week nights and some weekends.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Interviews, assists in training, and supervises lifeguards, swim instructors, coaches & water fitness staff.


2. Hold regular in-service trainings for all Aquatic Staff.


3. Teach/Assist Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, First Aid, BBP & O2 courses for staff recertification.

4. Assists in implementing and enforcing aquatic procedures and requirements for Aquatic Staff.

5. Develop staff schedule and ensure all shifts are covered. Lifeguard or teach as needed.

6. Maintain current certifications for self and staff.


7. Evaluate staff and provide feedback on a regular basis.


8. Work with Aquatic Director to plan, prepare and deliver safe, quality Aquatic Programs for youth and adults.

9. Effective problem solving with timely follow through.


10. Promptly return voicemails and emails.


11. Participate in staff meetings and association events.


12. Foster a spirit of teamwork & collaboration with other directors & staff members within branch & Association.

13. Support and assist branch leadership with any other projects or activities including Annual Support.


14. Engage and support volunteer involvement.

15. Specialization: Aquatics Coordinators may have a specialized focus such as Lifeguard coordination or Swim Lesson coordination. Though a specialized focus may exist, all aquatics coordinators will work together to provide a cohesive, safe environment for all. Coordinators will cross train and serve in any specialty focus as needed. Specialty focuses are not guaranteed and may be reassigned as needed.

Upholding the YMCA's commitment to the safety and well-being of youth in our programs is a core responsibility of all staff regardless of position.

1. Attend required abuse risk management training.

2. Screen employees and volunteers for abuse risk according to policies and procedures.

3. Train, supervise, and require adherence of employees and volunteers to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.

4. Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback about boundaries with consumers.

5. Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations.

6. Respond quickly and seriously to all reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.

7. Communicate the YMCA's commitment to abuse prevention.

8. Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Prior experience in working in Aquatics and supervision of others

• Demonstrate strong people skills, organizational and administrative skills

• Experience in program development, work with volunteers, financial development and customer service

• Certified American Red Cross or YMCA lifeguard (Certifications in CPR/AED, First Aid and Oxygen)

• (preferred) American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification or equivalent. LGI Certification is required within 90 days.


• (preferred) Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor (YSLI) or previous experience teaching group swim lessons.

• (preferred) Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification

• Must be able to be in the pool for extended periods of time (varying warm to cool water temperatures)

• Must be able to communicate verbally to groups and individuals in and out of the pool area.

• Ability to think in abstract, problem solve, remember and reconstruct.

• Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.

• Ability to lift equipment, and to lift or assist a distressed swimmer.

• Sit/stand for extended periods of time in a warm, humid environment

• Recognize distress signals through sight and sound in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.

• Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.


• See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
