Assistant Store Manager

Job Summary The Assistant Store Manager (ASM) is responsible for working with the GM to establish and maintain best‑of‑class customer services in a retail nursery operation. The ASM oversees and is accountable for their assigned portion of total store operations—ensuring maximum sales and profitability through merchandising, inventory control, expense control, employee management, and safety management. The ASM acts as a “key‑holder” and as the acting GM in the GM’s absence. Key Duties and Responsibilities Help oversee and manage a full service MVN retail nursery operation (Store). Own the assigned “Operations” or “Customer Service” duties and responsibilities. Ensure each customer receives outstanding service by providing a safe, clean, friendly environment, greeting and acknowledging every guest, maintaining standards, solid product knowledge, and all other components of customer service. Ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures through regular store management and staff meetings, store walk‑throughs and audits. Train and develop store management in all aspects of the business, and direct and monitor training and development of store personnel. Control loss, shrinkage, waste, variable expenses, payroll and employee turnover. Ensure appropriate merchandise stock levels, merchandise adjacencies and presentations, signage, and assortment in all areas of the nursery. Review store trends and recommend and initiate changes for maximizing goals and objectives. Meet sales goals by training, motivating, mentoring and providing feedback to sales staff. Participate in sales transactions of the store, including counter and phone sales, and oversee product installation/delivery. Protect and properly use all store assets, including inventory, equipment and facilities. Oversee administrative functions including POS transactions, warranty issues, etc. Maintain outstanding store conditions and visual merchandising standards. Propose innovative ideas to increase market share to Marketing and Sr. Management. Deal with all issues that arise from employees or customers (complaints, grievances, etc.). Serve as a shining example of good behavior and high performance and as the local face of MVN. Conduct or oversee all safety training, including heat, vehicle, pesticide safety, etc. Assist to oversee logistics/customer service. Perform other duties and tasks as assigned. Qualifications At least 2 years of experience in retail operations. At least 1 year in a supervisory or lead role. Experience in a retail, nursery, landscaping, or related environment preferred. Solid management skills and a basic understanding of HR and sales fundamentals. Understanding of sales and operations planning process, demand forecasting and marketing. Excellent customer relations and interpersonal skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Self‑directed, motivated, and able to act in an entrepreneurial fashion. Ability to work independently to complete tasks and meet inflexible deadlines. Ability to collect information, draw valid conclusions, and effectively resolve concerns/conflicts. Aptitude in decision‑making and problem solving. Ability to work well with others and be a leader. Basic computer skills including experience with POS systems and MS Office (Word, Excel, etc.). Strong time management, attention to detail, and follow‑through. Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple projects/activities simultaneously. Education BS or equivalent experience. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. Frequently lifts or moves items over 50 pounds. Must work outdoors for extended periods, in potentially extreme conditions, including rain, heat, sun, and wind.
