Provides professional nursing care while supporting daily radiology operations and imaging workflows. This role combines direct patient care responsibilities with radiology support functions, including patient preparation, procedural assistance, care coordination, imaging workflow support, and imaging informatics activities. The RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care while collaborating with technologists, radiologists, providers, and ancillary staff to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality imaging services. Serves as a clinical resource for patients undergoing imaging procedures, ensuring compliance with nursing standards, departmental protocols, and policies while promoting exceptional patient experiences. Responsibilities Professional Nursing Care Performs professional nursing assessments and develops individualized plans of care for patients undergoing imaging procedures. Assesses patient condition, history, allergies, laboratory results, and procedural readiness prior to imaging exams. Performs nursing interventions safely, effectively, and in accordance with nursing standards and regulatory requirements. Administers medications, including contrast agents and emergency medications, as ordered and within scope of practice. Initiates, monitors, and maintains intravenous access and infusion therapies. Monitors patients during and after imaging procedures, recognizing and responding appropriately to changes in patient condition. Provides patient education regarding imaging procedures, preparation instructions, post-procedure care, and discharge instructions. Documents assessments, interventions, patient responses, and outcomes in accordance with organizational standards. Advocates for patients and families to achieve safe and appropriate outcomes. Collaborates with radiologists, providers, and technologists to coordinate care and ensure procedural safety. Patient Care & Imaging Support Transport and prepare patients safely for imaging procedures following patient identification and safety protocols. Verify patient identity, consent requirements, and procedure details prior to examinations. Assist with patient positioning and procedural setup while ensuring patient comfort and dignity. Support patients experiencing anxiety, claustrophobia, pain, or medical complications during imaging procedures. Utilize appropriate lifting techniques and patient transfer equipment to ensure patient and staff safety. Set up, clean, and restock procedure and exam rooms to maintain readiness. Provide post-procedure monitoring and discharge instructions when indicated. Department Operations & Workflow Coordinate patient flow and prioritize patient care activities based on clinical acuity and operational demands. Register patients and verify demographic, insurance, and physician information as needed. Assist with scheduling, pre-certifications, verification of benefits, and patient preparation communications. Monitor patient readiness requirements, including laboratory testing and procedural documentation. Maintain communication with referring offices, providers, and patients regarding imaging services. Support efficient workflow through the use of TeleTracking, Cerner, FirstNet, and other departmental systems. Imaging Informatics & Systems Management Utilize PACS, Cerner PowerChart, Volpara, and other imaging systems to support patient care and department operations. Import/export studies, reconcile patient information, manage image records, and support image transfer activities. Ensure accurate documentation and data integrity across imaging and clinical information systems. Assist with troubleshooting workflow and informatics issues in collaboration with radiology leadership, IT personnel, and vendors. Maintain compliance with documentation, regulatory, and imaging record retention requirements. Care Coordination & Quality Initiate or maintain interventions to ensure continuity of safe and effective patient care throughout the imaging encounter. Evaluate patient outcomes and modify care plans as clinically indicated. Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives. Identify opportunities to improve patient care, operational efficiency, and departmental performance. Contribute to departmental excellence through innovation, teamwork, and evidence-based practice. Administrative & Clerical Support Answer phones and respond to patient, physician, and departmental inquiries professionally and courteously. Maintain logs, records, and departmental documentation as required. Assist with data collection, audits, reports, and department projects. Support onboarding, orientation, and education of new associates. Maintain knowledge of departmental policies, protocols, and organizational updates. Emergency Readiness Maintain competency in emergency response procedures and equipment. Know the location and use of adult and pediatric code carts, if applicable. Respond appropriately during emergency situations, including stroke, trauma, code, and rapid assessment team activations. Support physicians, technologists, and emergency teams during patient emergencies occurring within the imaging environment. Demonstrate proficiency in Basic Life Support (BLS) and other required certifications. Professional Conduct & Development Maintain accountability for nursing decisions, delegated activities, and professional practice. Demonstrate professionalism, empathy, and excellent customer service with patients, families, physicians, and coworkers. Uphold HIPAA, patient confidentiality, infection prevention, and safety standards. Participate in continuing education, mandatory training, and competency assessments. Maintain awareness of advances in radiology nursing, imaging technology, and clinical practice. Serve as a positive role model and resource to coworkers and interdisciplinary team members. Organizational Responsibilities Associates comply with the following organizational requirements: Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared. Completes mandatory education, annual competencies, and department-specific education within established timeframes. Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes. Maintains nursing licensure, certifications, and registrations in good standing. Maintains current BLS (CPR) certification and other certifications required by the department. Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques. Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, accreditation standards, and compliance expectations. Complies with established organization and department policies. Qualifications Education & Experience Graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse program required. Current Registered Nurse (RN) license required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. One (1) to three (3) years of nursing experience preferred. Previous experience in radiology, procedural nursing, critical care, emergency services, outpatient services, or ambulatory care preferred. Experience with Cerner, PACS, Volpara, TeleTracking, or comparable healthcare information systems preferred. Knowledge & Skills Demonstrates competency in nursing assessment, patient monitoring, medication administration, and clinical decision-making. Strong knowledge of patient safety, infection prevention, and emergency response principles. Ability to establish priorities and effectively manage multiple demands in a fast-paced imaging environment. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills. Strong organizational and documentation skills. Proficient computer and electronic medical record skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team. Knowledge of radiology procedures, contrast administration, sedation monitoring, and image‑guided procedures preferred. Working Conditions Works primarily within an imaging and procedural care environment requiring frequent patient interaction and varying clinical demands. May be exposed to biohazards, bloodborne pathogens, contrast agents, and radiologic environments. Requires flexibility to respond to urgent and emergent patient situations. Physical Demands Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling. Ability to assist with patient transfers and positioning using appropriate equipment and assistance. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds unassisted and greater weights with assistance in accordance with departmental policy. Ability to perform CPR and other emergency response activities.
