Senior Physical Therapist – Ambulatory Care (Boston, MA) Full‑time, 40 hours per week. Job Description Summary The Rehabilitation Services Department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, and orthopedic technician services to patients. Senior Physical Therapists must have at least three years of clinical experience, strong clinical knowledge and skills, and an unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in Massachusetts. Primary responsibility is to provide patient care in accordance with state licensing regulations, departmental standards, and acceptable professional standards of care. Treat adult patients with a variety of diagnoses across a range of acuity. Also serve as mentors, collaborate with other rehabilitation disciplines, assist in staff education and training, triage patient consults, develop programs, participate in quality initiatives, and optimize departmental policies and procedures. Opportunities for clinical growth through internal and external continuing education, financial support for conferences, and a formal mentorship program. Senior therapists may participate in various department committees, including Community Resource, Practice Standards, Staff Development, Rehab Recognition, and Research Committees. Advancement on a merit‑based clinical ladder is available. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Examines and evaluates patient’s physical therapy needs, formulates diagnosis, and develops treatment plan with goals directed toward maximizing function. Demonstrates competency in all clinical knowledge and skills specific to the patient case type(s) in assigned area of care. Acts as a clinical or non‑clinical resource. Consults with other members of the health care team to coordinate and ensure effectiveness of therapies. Assumes additional tasks such as orientation of new staff, committee participation, QI activities, supervision of students and aides, and development/revision of practice standards. Participates in implementation of quality assurance program for clinical service. Assists in triage, prioritization, monitoring admissions, referrals, and discharges to and from the service. Participates in special interest groups or committees to promote staff education and program development. Assists in proper care and distribution of department supplies and equipment, recommending adequate inventory and new equipment. Assumes duties and responsibilities in the absence of the clinical supervisor, as assigned by the Director. Participates in departmental meetings to formulate policies, procedures, and program development. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Graduate of an accredited physical therapy program. Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy required; Doctor of Physical Therapy preferred. Current unrestricted license to practice physical therapy from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience with a performance record that consistently exceeds expectations. Skills, Abilities, and Competencies Required Effective communication and interpersonal skills for leadership, training, and working relationships. Analytical abilities and sound knowledge in Physical Therapy to act as an education and clinical resource. Orientation period of up to three months for departmental familiarity and quality standards. Written and verbal communication skills to interact with patients, medical team, and families. Physical stamina for walking, standing, lifting, transferring, and transporting patients and equipment. Ability to work with a wide age range of patients (15 years old to geriatric). Knowledge of growth and development principles across all ages and competency in assessment and treatment relative to age‑specific needs. Working Conditions Exposure to blood/body fluids, hazardous materials, and communicable diseases (10‑25% of work time); unpleasant odors (up to 25%). Physical effort for lifting, transferring, and positioning of patients and equipment (up to 50%). Use of sharp and/or electrical equipment (up to 20%). Supervisory Responsibilities Assist with supervision and education of staff therapists, assistants, and aides. Fiscal Responsibilities Enter patient charges accurately and timely in support of medical documentation. Manage hospital and department equipment cost‑efficiently. Hospital‑Wide Responsibilities Works within legal, regulatory, accreditation, and ethical practice standards relevant to the position and as established by BWH/MGB; follows safe practices required for the position; complies with appropriate BWH and MGB policies and procedures; fulfills required training; brings potential matters of non‑compliance to the attention of the supervisor or other appropriate hospital staff.
