Staff Physician (Compensation and Pension Program) - EDRP Authorized

Summary Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants who are pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency (spoken and written) as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d) for physicians in direct patient‑care positions. Medical Degree: Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools include: LCME accredited schools for the year the degree was granted, or AOA approved schools for the year the degree was granted. Foreign medical graduates must have a medical school that meets ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated. Residency Training: Completion of a residency training program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Residency options: ACMGE accredited residency or fellowship completed in the year completed. AOA accredited residency or fellowship completed in the year completed. One year of post‑medical school training approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice in the U.S. Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the U.S. Licensure and Registration: Current full and unrestricted medical license in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or D.C. Residency exceptions: Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residencies who otherwise meet basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) under specific conditions. PRPs must have a fully licensed status and are appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis; they are not considered independent practitioners and have restricted scope of practice under supervision. Reference: For more information on qualification standards, visit Duties Primary Care Physician assigned to perform Compensation and Pension Program (C&P) duties – providing disability and Environmental Health exams for Veterans. Read and comply with Medical Staff Bylaws; complete all mandatory training annually. Perform C&P and Registry examinations required by the VBA to determine service connection and eligibility for non‑service‑connected pension. Conduct environmental health examinations, including Gulf War Registry and Agent Orange registry exams, as needed. Provide thorough reports including history, physical examination, and interpretation of diagnostic studies. Deliver well‑reasoned medical opinions to enable adjudication by non‑medical officials of the Veterans Benefits Administration and courts. Collaborate with other providers and participate in continuous process improvements. Assist with special clinic reviews or projects as required. Pay and Benefits Competitive salary with annual performance bonus and regular salary increases. Paid Time Off: 50‑55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays, and up to 5 days paid absence for CME). Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution. Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care; many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement.
