Diagnostic Imaging Technologist Sonographer

Job Summary Under indirect supervision, performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations and produces two‑dimensional ultrasonic recordings of internal organs. The images are used by physicians to diagnose disease processes and delineate normal and abnormal anatomy, including the abdomen, breast, musculoskeletal structures, pelvis, gravid uterus, and obstetric areas (e.g., maternal uterus, adnexa, fetal biophysical profile, amniocentesis). The role also performs interventional procedures such as biopsies, aspirations, and drainage procedures. Essential Responsibilities Upholds Kaiser Permanente policies, applicable state, federal, and local laws, and maintains professional behavior toward patients and coworkers. Performs patient scheduling via telephone, mail, or in person using OPAS; prepares patients for examinations and explains procedures. Consults with referring physicians and radiologists to determine the required ultrasonic procedure and to correlate patient history with the test to be performed. Operates diagnostic ultrasound equipment (real‑time, mobile, and in sterile operative settings) to obtain high‑quality diagnostic images. Selects transducers, adjusts equipment controls, and manipulates the transducer by hand to capture images while monitoring display for quality and artifact recognition. Records test data and patient information into ultrasound equipment computers; imports results onto magnetic tape, disk, strip printout, or film, and photographs images as necessary. Processes and prepares images for interpretation, discusses results with physicians, and uses ancillary devices such as selective transducers and monitors. Utilizes B‑mode, M‑mode, and real‑time techniques to scan areas of interest, noting significance of structures and equipment limitations. Maintains and documents clinical activity in a timely, comprehensive, and accurate manner, following all applicable policies and procedures. Demonstrates effective communication skills and professional maturity in all interactions with patients and staff; maintains equipment, supplies, and work area per department guidelines. Experience and Qualifications NT certification required for Nuchal Translucency procedures in the OB‑GYN department (job code 30818). Ability to operate ultrasound equipment to produce quality images, recognize normal anatomy, pathologic conditions, and differentiate disease processes. Consistently demonstrates knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors necessary to provide superior, culturally sensitive service. Education Specialty registration in abdominal, cardiac, cardiovascular, or vascular sonography may be required, depending on assignment. Licenses, Certifications, and Registration Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Certificate from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Certificate – OB‑GYN from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. Nuchal Translucency Certification Certificate. Basic Life Support Certification. Preferred Qualifications Minimum 2 years clinical experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in an acute care medical center. Additional Details This position requires working every other weekend.
