Job TitleDrillerJob Description and FunctionsOpen Until Filled GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a skilled Driller to join our team in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in shaping the state's transportation infrastructure while working on meaningful projects that keep Wyoming connected.As a Driller, you will operate drill rigs safely and efficiently to conduct geological and geotechnical investigations that support highway design and engineering. You will lead the daily activities of the drill team, oversee field operations, and ensure that all samples are obtained accurately and on schedule. This position requires a strong understanding of drill rig operations, support equipment, and proper maintenance practices.With minimal supervision, you will take ownership of the work, provide hands-on instruction to team members, and ensure that tools, equipment, and testing procedures meet the highest safety and performance standards. Join WYDOT and be part of a mission-driven team dedicated to building and maintaining safe, high-quality highways for generations to come.Human Resource Contact: View phone number on click.appcast.io ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.Accountable for knowing how to safely drill and test various soils and rocks to obtain samples for the Geologists to design highwaysDirects the work of drill helpers and flaggersThis position requires extensive travel (up to 90%) via auto, truck, airplane, etc.Gathers supplies needed for the weekCommunicates with WYDOT Personnel, geologists, Principal geologists, Drill supervisors, other agencies, and the private sectorWorks in all types of weather conditions and rugged terrain, works around other heavy equipment, and on busy highways under live traffic conditionsOperates and maintains drill trucks or transports with drills in a safe mannerDrill truck or transport duties include safely moving drill trucks or transporting them to drilling locations on various terrain and weather conditionsMaintains drill, water truck and or transport, and trailer; duties include washing, servicing, greasing as needed, and repairing equipment and augers, bits, A.W. rods, and testing equipmentSchedules service and maintenance for equipment with a supervisorAssists in traffic control, including setting signs, cones, etc., and flagging to help ensure a safe work zoneResponsible for reporting time and equipment hours or miles as part of overall project cost monitoringQualificationsPREFERENCES/AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: Must have or obtain a Commercial Driver's License KNOWLEDGE: Skill in oral communication Skill in interpersonal relations Ability to weld Knowledge of drilling with augers Knowledge of drill equipment and ability to troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical problems Ability to accept responsibility, make decisions, and learn from superiors Knowledge of different drilling techniques - air rotary, mud rotary, and wireline coring Ability to lift 100 poundsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Bachelor's Degree (typically in Construction) Experience: 0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Drilling) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Drilling Technician OR Education & Experience Substitution: High School Diploma, PLUS 3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Drilling) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Drilling Technician Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: NoneNecessary Special RequirementsNOTES: FLSA: Non-Exempt Individuals in this position will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing The Wyoming Department of Transportation is a Drug-Free Workplace E-Verify: WYDOT uses E-Verify, an Internet-based system, to confirm the eligibility of all newly hired employees to work in the United States.
