How you will make an impact The primary function of an Eligibility Specialist involves determining the eligibility of applicants for government assistance programs. The work includes processing data from electronic sources and entering information into a computer‑based eligibility system under state and federal requirements. Eligibility workers handle a high volume of work that is deadline‑driven. Interview applicants to obtain and verify information needed to determine eligibility for Food Assistance, Medicaid, and Cash Assistance. Learn numerous state and federal program regulations through intensive training and ongoing learning. Instruct clients on completing forms and reviewing applications for completeness and accuracy. Determine program eligibility using a computer‑based eligibility system in accordance with current regulations. Research information provided by an applicant until eligibility status is confirmed. Report cases where identity theft or fraud is suspected. Advise clients of deadlines, time frames, and necessary actions. Work with clients who may not take required actions within the time frame. Establish and maintain electronic files; conduct regular reviews and updates. Document all communications and contacts with clients. Manage an electronic caseload that varies with community needs; ensure accuracy and timely processing. Compute and authorize government assistance benefits based on financial and family status; explain monthly benefit amounts to customers. Stay current with changes in rules, laws, and procedures that affect timeliness and accuracy. Provide face‑to‑face contact with clients when required. Qualifications Two or more years of customer service, interviewing, recruiting, investigating, accounting, insurance processing, or eligibility determination experience; or an associate degree or higher from an accredited institution; or 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours can substitute for experience. Ability to attend an 8–12 week mandatory training course. Additional Information / Requirements Completion of a required skills assessment, including typing, general aptitude, and employee personality profile tests, is mandatory before advancing to the next hiring step. Hired candidates may be eligible for telework after nine months of employment, completion of training, and meeting performance expectations. Language proficiency may be considered based on agency needs. Incumbent may be expected to work during emergency situations or natural disasters. Navigate computer screens, complete basic documents and other forms. Plan and organize caseloads to meet regulatory deadlines. Read, understand, and apply detailed regulations and policy directives. Perform accurate and rapid mathematical computations. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the public and staff. Use computers and related software packages.
