Senior Director, Global Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability

Overview:

The Senior Director, Global Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability provides enterprise leadership for programs that protect employees, communities and the environment while enabling Alnylam’s mission of transforming the lives of people living with rare diseases. This role develops and executes a global strategy and governance framework that advances regulatory compliance, operational resilience, sustainability commitments, and a proactive culture of prevention and accountability.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Facilities, Engineering and Real Estate and leading a team of 5 EHSS professionals with 3 directly reporting, this leader serves as a trusted advisor to executive and business leadership and leads the global EHSS organization supporting research and development laboratories, GMP manufacturing, offices, field operations and country headquarters.

This is an onsite role based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with domestic and international travel as business needs require.

Responsibilities:

• Own and execute Alnylam’s global EHSS strategy, governance framework and multi-year performance roadmap in alignment withAlnylam 2030 , corporate objectives and business growth; advise executive leadership on regulatory, operational, sustainability and emerging EHSS risks.
• Achieve EHSS objectives through strong cross-functional leadership through others, influencing site leaders, project managers, facilities professionals and business stakeholders to ensure consistent adoption of EHSS standards, expectations and best practices globally.
• Lead and continuously improve the global EHSS Management System, EQUINOX, aligned with ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and recognized industry practices; establish consistent global standards while ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, local and country requirements.
• Ensure a risk-based, inspection-ready compliance assurance program encompassing legal and regulatory change, permits, audits, assessments, corrective actions, regulatory reporting and responses to government inspections or enforcement matters.
• Provide governance and technical leadership for occupational health, industrial hygiene, biosafety, laboratory and chemical safety, radiation safety, hazardous and biological waste, environmental compliance, ergonomics, fleet safety, contractor safety and other critical risk-control programs, including the assessment and control of novel or potent compounds.
• Lead enterprise sustainability and environmental stewardship initiatives, including greenhouse gas reduction, energy efficiency, waste minimization, water stewardship and accurate performance data and disclosures, in partnership with Corporate Responsibility, Finance, Procurement, Legal and operational stakeholders.
• Direct emergency preparedness, crisis management and incident response governance, including incident command, exercises, investigations, corrective actions, lessons learned and coordination with business continuity and operational resilience programs.
• Build and develop a high-performing global EHSS organization and integrate prevention-through-design and EHSS expectations into capital projects, laboratory and manufacturing expansions, commissioning, startup, decommissioning, contractor management and strategic business changes; establish executive metrics and dashboards that drive accountability and continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

Required

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, engineering, life sciences, or related fields.
• 15 or more years of progressive EHSS experience, including significant leadership responsibility across multiple sites, business units or geographies in biotechnology, pharmaceutical or another highly regulated industry.
• Demonstrated experience leading global EHSS programs across multiple countries and regulatory frameworks, including support for research laboratories and GMP pharmaceutical or biotechnology manufacturing operations.
• Demonstrated success leading through influence in a matrixed, global organization and achieving results through cross-functional teams and stakeholders without direct reporting relationships.
• Professional certification as a Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist or an equivalent recognized credential.
• Broad knowledge of applicable environmental, occupational health, safety, transportation and emergency management regulations and consensus standards.
• Proven ability to influence executive leaders, lead organizational change, develop teams, and build a culture of safety, compliance and environmental stewardship.
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally as business needs requires and to complete required GxP and company compliance training.

Preferred

• Master’s degree in a relevant technical discipline, business administration, or related field.
• Experience implementing, maturing or auditing ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems; Lead Auditor qualification/experience is desirable.
• Experience leading sustainability, environmental stewardship, corporate responsibility or ESG-related programs and performance reporting.
• Experience with high-potency compounds, biological agents, occupational exposure limits, process safety, capital projects, and emerging technologies.
• Incident Command System training and experience leading complex emergency or crisis response activities.

The pay range below reflects the full-time base salary range we expect to pay for this role at the time of posting. Base pay will be determined based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, skills, and education. This role is eligible for an annual short-term incentive award (e.g., bonus or sales incentive) and an annual long-term incentive award (e.g., equity).
