Non-Career Part-Time/Seasonal Lifeguard

This position is with the City of Sacramento, located in Sacramento, CA. The salary is $20.35 hourly for part-time non-career work. The position is seasonal and the application period is open from May 12, 2026, to December 31, 2026.

The position involves regular lifeguard duties, supervision of pool staff, and the organization and instruction of aquatics classes and activities. The incumbent will assume full responsibility for the aquatic facility in the absence of higher management. The role requires indirect supervision of lower level aquatic personnel, with direct supervision provided by the Assistant Pool Manager or Pool Manager.

Essential duties and responsibilities include constant surveillance to safeguard swimmers, rescue and resuscitate drowning persons, enforce facility rules, assist in the maintenance of the aquatic facility, write and prepare lesson plans, maintain records and reports, and perform the duties of the Pool Manager in their absence.

Qualifications include knowledge of lifeguarding techniques, rules and regulations of an aquatic facility, swimming rescue techniques, C.P.R., and first aid. Ability to swim with proficiency and endurance, prevent accidents and effect rescues, enforce rules, perform swimming rescues, C.P.R., and first aid, instruct students in aquatic classes, follow instructions, prepare reports, and interpret policies. Education: None required. Experience: One season or 2.5 months of experience at an aquatic facility as a lifeguard or swim instructor. Special qualifications include being at least 16 years of age, possessing a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR and AED certification, and passing a physical, criminal background check, and drug test. The position is designated as a Mandatory Reporter, requiring completion of Mandatory Reporter training within two weeks of appointment.

Physical demands include the ability to walk, start, and stop frequently; run and swim frequently; perform simple and power grasping; verbal and hearing skills to communicate effectively; visual acuity to read and record documents and make observations; ability to spend prolonged periods in pool water; maintain the physical ability required to pass the American Red Cross Lifeguard certification; intermittently lift, carry, or move equipment of 20 pounds or less. Environmental conditions include working outdoors with exposure to heat, sun, noise, dust, pollens, and pool chemicals. Work conditions require various hours including early morning, day, evenings, and weekends.
