Lifeguard

POSITION SUMMARY:

The YMCA is seeking lifeguards for our new downtown Sacramento location. The role involves maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas, and creating a safe, positive environment that promotes member safety and engagement in line with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Maintain active surveillance of the pool area. Review and respond to all emergency procedures promptly, following YMCA policies and the 'safe-in-six' model. Complete related reports as required. Build effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and staff. Understand and apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areas. Keep accurate records as required by the YMCA and state health regulations. Perform equipment checks and ensure necessary equipment is available. Inspect the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival. Conduct chemical testing when not on guard duty and take appropriate actions. Attend all staff meetings and training sessions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum age of 18. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid. Current YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguarding certification; YMCA Lifeguarding Certification must be obtained within 60 days of hire. Oxygen Administration certification required within 30 days of hire. Ability to maintain physical and mental readiness at certification level. Demonstrate lifeguard skills according to YMCA standards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to pass the lifeguard water test. Remain alert at all times. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods. Hear noises and recognize distress signals. Continuously scan all pool areas with clear vision. Perform strenuous physical tasks for water rescues. Communicate verbally, projecting voice across distances and in loud situations.

SALARY:

$16.00 - $22.34 per hour
