School Bus Mechanic

Hours: Various Compensation: $25.98 per hour* *Please note that the hourly rate of pay is inclusive of the mandatory 4.5% retirement contribution to the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF). Under the supervision of the Director of Transportation, and/or their designee, the School Bus Mechanic will maintain district vehicles in a state of operational excellence that meet and/or exceed all regulatory and district requirements and promotes safe, effective and efficient transportation services.

Job Responsibilities and Essential Duties:

• Diagnose and conduct repairs of district vehicles and equipment.
• Maintains vehicle compliance utilizing the Illinois Department of Transportation and federal standards.
• Conduct preventive maintenance programs in strict compliance with district requirements.
• Knowledge of State and Federal mandated requirements regarding the repair and maintenance of school buses.
• Perform minor paint touch-up and body repair.
• Inspection of vehicles for required State safety inspections.
• Display safe work standards and high quality levels of service.
• Must have the ability to identify important and/or emergency situations and respond accordingly.
• Must have the ability to read and understand a map when responding to "service calls."
• Perform emergency road repairs.
• Conduct daily fluid checks, preventative maintenance, and oil changes.
• Assist with ordering and inventory control of parts, department supplies, fluids etc.
• Maintain department equipment, tools and facility in accordance with district and OSHA regulations ensuring a safe and clean work environment.
• Process and complete reports as required.
• Work with and around hazardous materials and participate in emergency clean-up hazardous waste or material spills.
• Participate in training, meetings and various activities to maintain certifications and compliance of district educational requirements.
• Required to drive routes where student transportation is needed.
• Assist with the cleaning, clearing and safe operation of the department fueling stations, driveway and parking areas of the transportation facility.

Qualifications:

• ASE certification.
• Related experience with diesel and gasoline engines.
• Experience with computer diagnostics and ability to understand vehicle schematics.
• Must provide own tools.
• Strong skills set to inspect, repair and maintain vehicles and equipment. Complete understanding of safe operation and use of power and hand tools.
• Ability to communicate effectively, establish and maintain effective working relationships with district staff.
• Significant physical ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, including reaching, handling, lifting, pushing, pulling, stooping and carrying heavy equipment and tools essential to perform work duties.
• Ability to make sound, accurate and timely decisions in routing and critical conditions.
• Must possess and maintain a valid commercial driver's license with a school bus passenger endorsement in the State of Illinois and a clean driving record.
• Knowledge of IDOT regulations preferred.
• Must successfully pass the District's medical exam, and criminal background check.
• Must be a team player with an excellent work ethic and the attitude and flexibility to do what it takes to get the job done.
• This is a twelve month position with salary and benefits established between the Board of Education and the Oswego Custodial/Maintenance Association.

The knowledge, critical skills, and experience listed above are typical for this position; however, any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience, may be acceptable.

Working Conditions:

An automotive repair shop environment; subject to noise from equipment, fumes and performing heavy physical labor: also subject to emergency call-out after hours, various work schedules including weekend assignments.

Environmental Conditions

• Exposure to diesel fuel, gasoline, and all other vehicular fluids and fumes.
• Exposure to slippery, wet, and snowy conditions while walking and driving.
• Exposure to road construction, unsafe drivers, and congested traffic conditions when responding to emergencies that occur on the roadways.
• Possible exposure to body fluids and airborne pathogens.
• Exposure to temperature extremes.
• Will be required to leave the main work site and district boundaries.

Physical Demands

• Ability to bend, kneel, and lift at least 50 pounds during the course of the normal work day.
• Ability to effectively work within an often noisy, and distracting environment.
• Ability to maintain balance while climbing and/or standing on a ladder.
• Ability to physically work in small, confined areas.
• Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and long hours.
