Veterinary Technician

Job Overview We are looking for a Veterinary Technician (Levels I, II) to join our Insourcing Solutions team located in Poolesville, MD (see qualifications for each level). In this role you will support and maintain the site animal colonies and Animal Study Protocols to support the research program. You will care for and maintain lab animals in accordance with all guidelines, policies, and regulations to ensure their health and welfare. Responsibilities Review, comprehend, and participate in the development of SOPs and quality assurance standards for the area. Provide veterinary technical and surgical support for NHPs, including animal handling, restraint, sample collection, injections, treatments, surgical preparation, anesthesia, intubations, catheter placements, and necropsy. Operate and maintain medical equipment such as blood gas analyzers, CBC machines, X‑ray, anesthetic machines, EKG monitors, blood pressure recorders, IV pumps, dental and surgical instruments, irradiators, and sterilizers. Arrange, clean, and maintain procedure, treatment, and necropsy rooms, ensuring quality control of supplies and monitoring expiration dates. Calculate drug dosages and administration frequencies. Accurately maintain electronic medical records and update treatment plans. Monitor the environment and provide animal health surveillance per the facility veterinarian's directions. Assist in documenting surgical, anesthetic, and treatment procedures in the animal medical records and files. Provide support to the nonhuman primate environmental enrichment and psychological well‑being plan when behavioral staff are unavailable. Maintain required attendance levels and adhere to the work schedule to ensure assigned duties are completed. Perform other duties as assigned. Job Qualifications LevelI High school diploma or GED. One of the following: AA in Veterinary Technology; 2‑3 years of experience working with animals in biomedical research or companion veterinary medicine; AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification. LevelII HS diploma or GED required; BS in Animal Science, Biology, or a related field preferred. AA in Veterinary Technology also acceptable. 3‑5 years of experience working with animals (biomedical research preferred); at least 1 year with non‑human primates. Eligibility to take the AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician Graduate (LATG) certification. Pay Pay range: $28.00 to $33.00 USD per hour (levels I‑II; salary depends on level, experience, skills, and certification). Physical Demands & Work Environment Regular walking, standing, and hand use; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; occasional sitting. Regular lifting or moving up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements: close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Exposure to laboratory animal caging (non‑human primates), warm/humid conditions, and chemicals. Moderate noise level and variable weather conditions.
