Job Title

Registered Nurse (RN) House Supervisor - Psychiatric Hospital

Position Summary

The RN House Supervisor provides clinical leadership and operational oversight for all psychiatric inpatient units during assigned shifts. This role ensures safe, therapeutic, and compliant patient care; supports nursing and interdisciplinary staff; manages hospital-wide patient flow and staffing; and serves as the administrative and clinical leader in the absence of nursing and executive leadership.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical & Patient Care Oversight

• Maintain responsibility for the quality, safety, and appropriateness of patient care across all psychiatric units
• Address call-ins, staffing shortages, and re-assignments.
• Support staff in managing high-acuity psychiatric situations, including behavioral emergencies, restraints, seclusion, and crisis stabilization
• Ensure adherence to staffing ratios and acuity-based assignments.
• Deploy PRN or agency staff appropriately and safely.
• Other duties as assigned.

Leadership & Staff Support

• Provide real-time coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback to staff
• Address staff concerns, patient/family complaints, and conflict resolution in a professional and timely manner
• Assist with complex patient issues.
• Support staff with deescalation technics and trauma informed care.

Operations & Administrative Responsibilities

• Coordinate patient admissions, discharges, and transfers in collaboration with intake, providers, and unit leadership
• Ensure appropriate documentation, incident reporting, and follow-up
• Communicate critical information to oncoming supervisors and leadership

Qualifications

Education

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

Licensure & Certification

• Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice
• Current BLS certification (ACLS and CPI/PMAB or equivalent crisis intervention training preferred)

Experience

• Minimum of 3-5 years of psychiatric nursing experience
• Prior charge nurse, lead nurse, or supervisory experience strongly preferred
• Experience in acute inpatient psychiatric or behavioral health setting required

• Demonstrated leadership and conflict resolution ability
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in high-stress situations
• Knowledge of psychiatric treatment modalities, risk assessment, and behavioral de-escalation techniques

Physical Requirements

• Ability to respond rapidly to emergencies and behavioral crises
• Ability to walk, stand, and move throughout the facility for extended periods
• Ability to lift or assist patients using safe patient handling equipment
• Emotional resilience and ability to function effectively in a fast-paced behavioral health environment

Work Environment

• Acute inpatient psychiatric hospital
• Exposure to potentially violent or aggressive behaviors
• Shift-based role, including nights, weekends, and holidays
