Part-Time Elementary & Middle School Reading & Math Instructor

Sylvan Learning of Park Ridge is seeking enthusiastic, dependable  Reading and Math Instructors to work with students in  grades K through 8 . If you enjoy helping children build confidence while strengthening their academic skills, we'd love to hear from you.

What You'll Do

• Teach  reading and/or math to elementary and middle school students in a supportive, engaging environment.
• Work with students in a  small-group setting (maximum 3 students per instructor)using Sylvan's proven instructional programs.
• Provide instruction based on each student's individual skill level and learning needs.
• Motivate students while helping them strengthen foundational and grade-level skills.

Reading Instruction May Include:

• Phonics and Phonemic Awareness
• Letter-Sound Relationships
• Decoding and Word Recognition
• Reading Fluency
• Vocabulary Development
• Reading Comprehension
• Main Idea and Supporting Details
• Inference and Critical Thinking
• Reading Strategies for Fiction and Nonfiction

Math Instruction May Include:

• Number Sense
• Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication & Division
• Fractions & Decimals
• Ratios & Proportions
• Pre-Algebra
• Algebra Readiness
• Basic Geometry
• Problem Solving and Mathematical Reasoning

In addition, instructors will:

• Build positive relationships with students that encourage confidence and academic success.
• Monitor student progress and communicate instructional observations with the Education Director.
• Help create an encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing new skills.

Qualifications

• Strong reading, writing, and/or mathematics skills appropriate for teaching students through the 8th-grade level .
• For reading instructors, a strong understanding of  phonics, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension is preferred.
• For math instructors, a strong understanding of mathematics through 8th-grade level, including Pre-Algebra and Algebra I readiness .
• Bachelor's degree or current enrollment toward a degree in  English, Mathematics, Science, Engineering,  or other STEM fields.
• Previous teaching or tutoring experience is required.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Friendly, patient, energetic, and dependable.
• Ability to work effectively with students of different ages and academic skill levels.
• A genuine passion for helping students build confidence and succeed academically.

Schedule

This is a  part-time, in-person position .

Typical instructional hours include:

• Monday–Thursday: Afternoon and evening hours
• Friday: Limited afternoon/evening hours
• Saturday: Morning and/or early afternoon hours

Flexible scheduling is available for qualified candidates.

• Applicants must be experienced classroom educators who are capable of providing instruction to students through at least the fifth-grade level in reading, math or both. Experience limited to camps, after-school programs, before-school programs, or similar settings does not satisfy the qualifications for this role. Work Location: In person
