RN Medical Unit

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse for the IL-4 Medical unit is responsible for providing skilled nursing care to a diverse patient population including stroke patients, post-operative cases, comfort care, and hospice patients. The role requires managing complex clinical situations such as heparin drips, wound care, dialysis, and respiratory exacerbations, while maintaining a high standard of patient assessment, medication administration, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The nurse will work primarily night shifts with a focus on stroke care and must be certified in stroke nursing and NHISS. Responsibilities:

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients with stroke, post-operative conditions, comfort care, and hospice needs.
• Administer medications including heparin drips and manage wound care, chest tubes, feeding tubes, and drains.
• Monitor and manage patients with altered mental status, CIWA, acute kidney injury, dialysis, and COPD exacerbations.
• Perform patient assessments, document care, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement treatment plans.
• Maintain a nursing ratio of approximately 5-6:1 during night shifts, occasionally providing total care for one patient.
• Ensure compliance with stroke certification standards and utilize NHISS scoring for stroke patients.
• Provide patient and family education and support as needed.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in the state of Illinois.
• Stroke certification and NHISS certification.
• Minimum of 2 years nursing experience in a hospital or similar clinical setting.
• Ability to perform clinical assessments, medication administration, and treatment planning.
• Strong communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience with post-operative care including amputations and care of patients with drains and feeding tubes.
• Experience managing comfort care and hospice patients.
• Familiarity with CIWA protocols and dialysis care.

Special Considerations:

• Must be able to work three 12-hour night shifts consecutively.
• Work every other weekend and every other holiday.
• Experience and comfort working with stroke patients and critical care protocols.

Scheduling:

• Night shift schedule with three 12-hour shifts in a row.
• Rotating weekends every other week and holidays every other cycle.
