Job Description
This Phlebotomist II role provides hands-on patient care and specimen collection across multiple locations in the Newberg, Bridgeport, Sherwood, and Portland areas. You will greet patients, perform blood draws and other specimen collections, process and store samples according to strict protocols, and ensure accurate documentation and data entry. The position requires strong technical phlebotomy skills, excellent customer service, and the ability to work reliably in a fast-paced, team-oriented laboratory environment. This is a contract role with the potential for extension and future direct-hire opportunities based on business needs and performance.
Responsibilities
- Greet patients as they arrive at the laboratory and provide a professional, friendly, and reassuring experience.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients, including blood, urine, and fecal collections as required.
- Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, demonstrating proper technique and adherence to safety protocols.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures, ensuring sample integrity and proper handling at all times.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, verifying that all orders are fully understood and correctly interpreted.
- Label specimens accurately, centrifuge, split, and freeze samples as required by specific test orders and protocols.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy prior to processing or transport.
- Package specimens for transport, following all protocols to maintain specimen integrity and meet temperature and handling requirements.
- Store specimen samples at required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, and follow protocol-specific procedures for transport.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend annual department trainings to maintain up-to-date knowledge of safety and regulatory requirements.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination activities in the laboratory as needed to support a safe and clean work environment.
- Update patient information and perform accurate data entry in laboratory systems, including handling insurance and billing information as required.
- Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results when appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
- Prepare collection sites and equipment for specimen collection, ensuring all necessary supplies are available and in proper working condition.
- Process specimens, including centrifuging and other specimen processing tasks, in accordance with laboratory standards.
- Deliver excellent customer service to patients, maintaining a patient-first mindset and ensuring a positive experience.
- Demonstrate reliability through consistent attendance and punctuality, and take initiative in daily tasks and workflow.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues in a strong team environment, contributing to a positive, supportive, and hardworking culture.
- At least 6 months of phlebotomy experience, including routine blood collection and specimen handling.
- Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Phlebotomy certification or documented phlebotomy training, with practical experience in blood collection.
- Experience with specimen processing, including centrifuging, labeling, splitting, freezing, and storing samples.
- Strong customer service skills, with prior experience in any customer-facing setting.
- Ability to explain medical procedures to patients clearly, courteously, and in an understandable manner.
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology relevant to phlebotomy and laboratory procedures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
- Accurate data entry skills for patient information, test orders, and laboratory records.
- Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and willingness to comply with all safety and regulatory requirements.
- Proven reliability and positive attendance record in previous roles.
- Ability to take feedback well and demonstrate eagerness to learn and grow.

- High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience in blood collection across diverse patient populations, including geriatrics.
- Familiarity with insurance and billing processes related to laboratory services.
- Comfort handling multiple specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
- Ability to read and interpret physician orders and laboratory requisitions accurately.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in specimen labeling and order matching.
- Effective verbal communication skills for interacting with patients, clinical staff, and callers.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment while maintaining quality and safety.
- Openness to working in different locations as part of a float position, adapting quickly to new settings and teams.

This is a float Phlebotomist II position based in the Newberg area, primarily serving Providence Newberg (1000 Providence Drive, Newberg, Oregon) and covering additional patient service centers in Bridgeport, Sherwood, and Portland. The home base will be the patient service center closest to the candidate’s residence. The schedule follows a daytime track with hours approximately from early morning to 6:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with coverage of two Saturdays per month. Work takes place in clinical laboratory and patient service center settings that require adherence to safety protocols, proper specimen handling, and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations. You will use standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and computer systems for data entry and patient information management. The environment emphasizes a strong team culture, collaboration, and support, with opportunities for professional growth and movement into different departments within a global organization. This role is offered as a contract initially slated for about 3 months, with most contracts typically extending to 6–9 months depending on business needs and performance. There is potential, though not guaranteed, for transition to a direct position based on organizational requirements and individual performance.
