The role combines technical phlebotomy skills with strong customer service, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure while maintaining a compassionate, patient-first approach.
Responsibilities
- Welcome and check in patients as they arrive at the laboratory, providing clear, courteous guidance throughout their visit.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures (including blood, urine, and fecal samples) in a clear and reassuring manner to help ease patient anxiety.
- Perform venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles, including difficult draws such as those involving scar tissue, rolling veins, and pediatric and geriatric patients.
- Collect specimens according to established procedures, ensuring proper identification, handling, and storage to maintain specimen integrity.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, verify orders, and check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
- Package specimens for transport, following detailed procedures for temperature control and container requirements to preserve sample quality.
- Store specimens at required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, and follow protocol-specific procedures for transport.
- Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and complete other routine laboratory housekeeping duties as needed.
- Update patient information and perform accurate data entry in laboratory information systems, EMR systems, and related technology platforms.
- Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
- Handle insurance and billing-related tasks associated with specimen collection and processing, following established guidelines.
- Prep collection sites according to infection control standards and maintain a clean, safe environment for patients and staff.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, and attend annual departmental trainings and compliance sessions.
- Provide excellent customer service by demonstrating a patient-first mindset, professionalism, and empathy during all interactions.
- Collaborate effectively with peers and participate in a culture of peer auditing to uphold quality and safety standards.
- Manage workload independently, prioritize tasks, and maintain productivity in high-pressure, fast-paced environments with 20–50+ draws per shift.
- Adapt to different sites, trainer schedules, and staffing needs, providing coverage as required, including one Saturday per month.
- Maintain a strong attendance record, demonstrate reliability, and contribute positively to a team-focused work culture.
- Stay resilient under pressure, uphold professionalism, and show eagerness to learn and incorporate feedback into daily practice.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Demonstrated proficiency with straight needles and butterfly needles, including handling difficult draws (scar tissue, rolling veins, pediatric and geriatric patients).
- 2–4 years of overall experience in a healthcare or laboratory environment, including specimen collection and processing responsibilities.
- Strong phlebotomy skills, including blood drawing, venipuncture, and specimen collection in high-volume settings.
- Accuracy in specimen handling, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing according to test orders and protocols.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
- Ability to navigate EMR systems and laboratory information systems (LIS), and troubleshoot common technology issues.
- Competence with scanners, tablets, computers, and related devices used in specimen collection and tracking.
- Reliable data entry skills with high attention to detail and commitment to error-free documentation.
- Clear, professional communication skills to explain procedures, answer questions, and provide results over the phone when appropriate.
- Strong customer service orientation and a patient-first mindset, demonstrating compassion and professionalism.
- Proven ability to work effectively in high-pressure environments with 20–50+ blood draws per shift.
- Demonstrated ability to manage workload independently while collaborating well within a team.
- Consistent reliability and a strong attendance record, supporting stable operations and patient care.
- Flexibility to move between sites, adapt to varying trainer schedules, and assist with staffing shortages as needed.
- Understanding of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety protocols.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- National Phlebotomy Certification (such as NHA, ASCP, or equivalent) preferred but not required.
- Experience in specimen processing, including packaging for transport and maintaining required storage conditions.
- Familiarity with insurance and billing processes related to laboratory services.
- Experience reading and communicating laboratory results to satisfy patient and provider inquiries.
- Ability to quickly learn new systems, devices, and workflows, incorporating feedback and demonstrating eagerness to grow.
- Adaptability and teamwork skills, including comfort working in diverse teams and participating in peer-auditing practices.
- Positive, hardworking attitude with a willingness to take initiative and support colleagues.
- Resilience and the ability to remain productive, calm, and professional under pressure.
- Interest in long-term career growth within a large, global organization offering opportunities across laboratory, sales, client services, and other departments.
This role is based in a clinical laboratory setting within a medical center, working Monday through Friday from 07:00 to 15:30, with coverage for one Saturday per month as needed.
