Clinical Psychologist

Agency: Department of Corrections Location: Sioux Falls or Pierre Pay: $96,000 to $120,000 (Pay Grade DS-C) Job Summary A full‑time Clinical Psychologist position within the Department of South Dakota Corrections. The role provides comprehensive psychological services to male and female offenders, contributing to risk assessment, rehabilitation, and safety within correctional facilities. Responsibilities Provide professional psychological services to offenders, including formal and informal mental health evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and clinical interventions. Deliver group services, individual therapy, and crisis intervention. Assist with screening and classification as needed. Oversee competency restoration cases. Collaborate with the Risk Reduction team. Use standardized tools (e.g., VRAG‑R, PCL:SV) to assess risk, violence, and psychopathy. Recommend high‑risk offenders for institutional and parole staff upon reentry. Assess emergency and non‑emergency transfers for offenders with acute mental health needs. Participate in determination of eligibility for services such as intellectual disability. Work with educational staff to formulate Individualized Education Programs and diagnose learning disabilities. Provide clinical direction, education, and training to non‑clinical correctional staff. Cooperate with behavioral staff on behavior management and treatment plans. Supervise psychology interns when applicable. Document accurately and timely to maintain comprehensive mental health records. Maintain safety and security through observant practices and contraband control. Serve as a member of multidisciplinary teams addressing complex offender needs. Licenses and Certifications Doctoral degree from an accredited institution in psychology and licensure or license‑eligible status in South Dakota. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with correctional clients or within a correctional setting. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Provide professional behavioral health treatment to offenders. Assess, evaluate, and diagnose using evidence‑based tools. Work with special populations, including sex offenders, developmental/intellectual disabilities, and violent offenders. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across programs and with external agencies. Independent work capability and efficient handling of competing priorities. Comprehensive clinical documentation proficiency. Effective as part of a multidisciplinary team. Proficient in reading and comprehending English. Fluent oral and written communication in English. Physical and Safety Requirements Potential to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray and complete a written and practical self‑defense exam. Pass a CPR exam to AHA guidelines.
