As a Field Service Technician‑Network you will install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases (Key Systems, PBX, Centrex Systems, and or other business systems). The role includes splicing and maintaining outside‑plant facilities and equipment, installing, splicing, repairing and maintaining aerial, buried, and/or underground fiber optic and copper cable, and providing face‑to‑face customer service to identify needs and promote TDS services. Services include Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and high‑speed networks. Field‑service technicians must reside within a 60‑minute distance from Verona, WI, due to in‑field support and on‑call requirements. Responsibilities Assist with and perform on‑site installation, troubleshooting, testing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining telephone equipment and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities and other TDS products & services for new and existing customers. Identify locations of defective cable using test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground and customer cable. Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and construction needs, climb poles, and operate construction equipment. Mark and locate company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage, keep an orderly log of locate requests, and perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities. Respond to trouble dispatches and provide troubleshooting support techniques and corrections. Support and maintain record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements, etc.). Provide excellent customer service and proactively educate and sell TDS products and services. Acquire working knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices associated with splicing and maintenance of outside‑plant equipment. Qualifications Required Qualifications 1+ year basic technical telecommunications experience or current/past military service with honorable discharge. 6+ months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and/or repair, installation, and repair experience, or switch training. Valid driver’s license. Follow TDS attendance guidelines in order to meet business needs. Other Qualifications Must complete customer‑specific background checks upon hire. Must be available for on‑call/standby duties, occasional travel, and may need to work overtime as required. Must pass all Safety Course curriculum components and maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with a combined GVRW >10,000 lbs. Strong technical understanding of fiber and copper plant installation and troubleshooting. Comprehensive knowledge of telecommunication products and services: Inside Wiring/Cable, Internet/Intranet, Bonding & Grounding, Data & Computer/Transmission Concepts, Fiber Optic Transmission, Static Sensitive Equipment, Color Codes, Structured Wiring, Video/CATV/DBS Installation, Inventory Systems, Cable Locating, Battery Maintenance, Key Systems/PBX, Centrex, Switch Maintenance, Voicemail, Special Circuits, Fiber Terminals, Subscriber CXR Terminals, T‑1s, ISPs, DSL, ISDN Voice & Data, Testing & Certifying Loops to support data, voice, and/or video. Experience with computer applications such as databases, trouble/repair/dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Explorer, and CD‑Roms. Ability to work independently with little supervision. Excellent customer‑service, sales, verbal, and written communication skills. Organizational and multitasking abilities. Capability to operate vehicles with manual transmissions. Physical Demands & Work Environment Work requires regular sitting, standing, writing, and computer use; frequent reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and the ability to lift up to 100 pounds. Visual acuity, color vision, and peripheral vision may be required. Work may occur outdoors, in mechanical/ equipment rooms, and under extreme weather conditions.
