Job Description
Job Description
Resource Innovations is seeking Residential Energy Auditors to support a large-scale residential energy efficiency program in the Charlotte, North Carolina area. This field-based role conducts comprehensive in-home energy assessments, identifies practical opportunities to reduce energy use and improve comfort, and helps customers understand available energy-saving improvements and program offerings.
The Residential Energy Auditor will evaluate building-envelope conditions, HVAC and water-heating systems, insulation, air leakage, lighting, appliances, and other energy-related features using Building Performance Institute (BPI) standards and approved diagnostic procedures. The role also supports program quality through accurate data collection, timely documentation, contractor coordination, and post-installation inspections. Success requires strong technical judgment, a customer-first approach, and the ability to work safely and independently in occupied homes while meeting established productivity, quality, and customer-experience expectations.
Resource Innovations (RI) is a women-led energy transformation firm focused on impact. Building on our expertise in energy efficiency, we are continually expanding our portfolio of clean energy solutions to help utilities navigate increasingly complex and connected challenges, including load flexibility, electrification, and carbon reduction.
Duties and Responsibilities- Conduct scheduled, on-site residential energy audits throughout the assigned service territory in accordance with BPI standards, program protocols, and applicable health and safety requirements.
- Assess the home as a system, including the building envelope, insulation, windows and doors, HVAC equipment, ventilation, domestic water heating, lighting, appliances, and other energy-consuming systems.
- Use approved diagnostic equipment and field procedures, which may include blower doors, combustion-safety testing equipment, infrared cameras, pressure diagnostics, and other building-science tools.
- Identify air leakage, insulation gaps, equipment deficiencies, health and safety concerns, and energy-saving opportunities; develop clear, cost-effective recommendations aligned with program eligibility and technical requirements.
- Collect accurate site, equipment, building, occupancy, and energy-use information and enter required data, photos, measurements, test results, and recommendations into designated program systems or mobile applications.
- Explain audit findings, recommended improvements, available incentives, next steps, and energy-saving practices to homeowners and residents in clear, respectful, and accessible language.
- Support income-qualified and other participating households with empathy and professionalism, protecting customer privacy and maintaining a positive experience in occupied homes.
- Coordinate with program staff, installation contractors, trade allies, and community partners to facilitate customer handoffs, resolve field questions, and support timely completion of recommended measures.
- Perform post-installation inspections and quality assurance/quality control reviews to confirm that installed weatherization, HVAC, water-heating, and related measures meet program specifications and workmanship standards.
- Document deficiencies, communicate corrective-action needs, and verify resolution in accordance with established quality-management procedures.
- Maintain assigned diagnostic equipment, follow safe-driving and field-safety practices, and promptly report unsafe conditions or customer concerns.
- Manage a daily field schedule efficiently, maintain accurate records, and submit complete documentation within required timelines.
- Participate in training, calibration, quality reviews, and continuous-improvement activities to strengthen audit consistency, customer satisfaction, and program performance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two or more years of experience in residential energy auditing, building science, weatherization, HVAC, construction, field services, quality assurance/quality control, or a related energy-efficiency environment.
- Current BPI Building Analyst Technician, Building Analyst Professional, or other relevant BPI certification; candidates with directly related experience who can obtain the required certification within an established introductory period may be considered.
- Working knowledge of residential construction, building-envelope performance, HVAC and water-heating systems, combustion safety, and common energy-efficiency measures.
- Ability to learn and consistently apply program eligibility rules, technical standards, documentation requirements, and customer-service procedures.
- Strong communication, customer-service, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to use mobile devices, CRM platforms, audit software, and other web-based field tools.
- Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel regularly throughout the assigned service territory; limited overnight travel may be required.
- Ability to work in attics, crawlspaces, basements, mechanical rooms, and other confined or non-climate-controlled residential areas; climb ladders; and safely lift and carry diagnostic equipment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Associate or bachelor's degree in building science, construction management, environmental science, energy, engineering technology, or a related field.
- Additional BPI credentials or HERS/RESNET Rater certification.
- Experience conducting blower-door testing, combustion-safety testing, infrared inspections, or residential post-installation quality inspections.
- Experience with utility-sponsored energy-efficiency, rebate/incentive, weatherization, or income-qualified programs.
- Experience using residential audit software such as Snugg Pro or a comparable platform.
- Spanish-English bilingual communication skills.
- Established familiarity with local housing, contractor, community-development, or energy-assistance networks.
- Customer focus and respect for diverse households
- Technical accuracy and attention to detail
- Independent field execution and schedule management
- Sound judgment and commitment to safety
- Collaboration with program teams and contractor networks
- Integrity and protection of confidential information
- Adaptability in a fast-paced, performance-driven environment
