Description Patient Care Associate MSH GP9W Medicine FT Days EOW As an integral part of the clinical care team, the Patient Care Associate is responsible for patient care and support activities promoting patient focused care within the Specialty Service. The Patient Care Associate supports the registered nurse in patient care activities, such as assisting patients with activities of daily living, collecting specimens and performing procedures; maintaining a safe, clean environment; and other duties as needed. Responsibilities A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Demonstrates ability to perform clinical/technical/service/administrative tasks. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Performs and records patients’ vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respirations; documents intake and output and other data as assigned. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Obtains patient’s rating on pain scales as a fifth vital sign in all areas except Pediatrics. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Performs clinical procedures including specimen collection (blood glucose, venipuncture, EKG), application of compression devices, post-mortem care, and maintenance of skin integrity. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Sets up for selected procedures and assists RN’s accordingly. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Assists patient with activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, toileting; orients patients; assists ambulation and all levels of mobilization. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Assists with dietary functions, including delivering and collecting patient trays at bedside, passing menus to patients, assisting with menu completion, mixing nutritional supplements, reporting variation in eating patterns to RN/Dietitian, and maintaining accurate and timely systems for transmission of patient dietary orders and changes. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Maintains a safe, clean and functional environment, ensuring comfortable movement of the patient, assists patient in room maintenance such as bed‑stripping and trash removal. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Performs on‑to‑one observation or close observation status of patients (e.g., safety, elopement risk, suicide prevention). A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Maintains “isolation status” for patients under direction of an RN. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Performs scheduled hourly care checks/rounding on patients, emphasizing toileting needs, comfort, positioning and pain awareness; notifies RN if rounding not completed. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Utilizes Vocera system/Mount Sinai phone according to sign‑in/sign‑out protocol when activated. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Performs other assigned duties including generating reports. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Is open and responsive to diverse backgrounds and promotes an environment sensitive to cultural diversity, respecting each patient’s unique needs. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Greets visitors and answers telephones promptly and courteously; escorts visitors when necessary; provides information as appropriate. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Answers patient call system and refers calls to appropriate staff. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Maintains a safe, clean environment by removing trash and reporting equipment problems to managers. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Transports patients to stretchers or wheelchairs as required. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Delivers and collects trays at bedside, delivers flowers to patients. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Strips units/cubicles. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Performs emergency clean‑up and transport. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Performs discharge bed‑making. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Transports specimens. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Updates communication board/discharge log. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Assembles medical records. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Updates admission/transfer/discharge processes. A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Maintains supplies and care of equipment. B. Organizational/Managerial: Participates in department’s performance improvement activities. B. Organizational/Managerial: Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in information management. B. Organizational/Managerial: Observes Health Care System’s compliance policies. C. Educational/Professional Development: Participates in the development of other staff members. C. Educational/Professional Development: Meets regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements. C. Educational/Professional Development: Identifies learning strengths and needs. C. Educational/Professional Development: Utilizes learning resources. D. Communication/Relationships: Demonstrates a professional, courteous, respectful attitude with patients, families and others. D. Communication/Relationships: Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all hospital staff and extended community. Qualifications High School Diploma (graduate or equivalent). Certificate of completion of a medical assistant/patient care assistant program (or equivalent) with skills in venipuncture and EKG. Interpersonal skills to communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of the Specialty Service. Documentation of Medical Assistant/Patient Care Associate training. Three to nine months of healthcare experience preferred. Ability to set priorities, problem‑solve, use proper judgment in difficult situations and be flexible. Proficient oral and written skills in English. Physical stamina and manual dexterity to perform a variety of tasks and skills in the area of assignment. American Heart Association Heartsaver or BLS Certification. Compensation The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $27.8501 - $29.8772 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need.
