Non-CDL Van Driver

Successful driver applicants will be trained to perform all driver duties to obtain a type II authorization. We provide paid training and guide you through the van type II training process.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Conditions of employment include:
- Minimum age of 21 with at least 5 years' driving experience.
- Successful completion of training or certification programs related to position. This could include, but is not limited to, one of the following: High School Diploma, GED, AA, BA, etc., if applicable.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must meet the Physical Demands of the position and evacuate a school bus from a seated position under 25 seconds.
- Successful completion of Bus Driver training program to have non-CDL authorization through OSPI.
- Possess a driving record with no more than one moving violation for the last five years.
- Must pass a basic skills test.
- Participate in the random drug and alcohol testing consortium.
- Must be First Aid certified or willing to obtain First Aid certification with thirty (30) days of employment.
- Keep a current DOT physical on file at all times.
- Completion of Safe Schools Web Based Training within thirty (30) days of hire and yearly thereafter.
- Must pass a background check, which includes employee paid fingerprinting.
Qualifications required include:
- Minimum of two (2) supervisory references indicating satisfactory skills and abilities.
- Must uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
- Must take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
- Must maintain the physical and licensing requirements of a Non-CDL driver as required.
- Must be able to pass a yearly bus evacuation drill and maintain the physical requirements of removing children safely from the van. Must possess sufficient strength and ability to assist ill or physically impaired students to enter or exit a vehicle.
- Maintain appropriate driving record as per OSPI standards.
- Must attend yearly in-service trainings as required, as well as attend any training as directed by management.
- Evidence of ability to assess and correct issues involving safety.
- Evidence of ability to establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative and effective relationship with students, parents, staff, fellow employees and management.
- Evidence of ability to approach assigned work in a professional manner, working toward the common goal of teamwork, pride in service delivery and continuous improvement
- Must demonstrate sufficient command of the English language to communicate verbally and in writing with students, parents, district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job-related activities.
- Must be able to use basic computer programs to enter timecard information and read and respond to email.
Qualifications preferred include:
- Previous experience working with young people preferred.
- Evidence of ability to manage large groups of young people.
- Evidence of excellent attendance, punctuality, and dependability; evidence of ability to be self-disciplined and a self-starter.
- Positive job evaluations and recommendations.
The van driver will:
- Efficiently operate a van on scheduled routes and/or on all types of trips in support of district approved activities, both within and outside the school district boundaries.
- Operate vans under all types of weather conditions including but not limited to fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow and ice.
- Communicate route changes and requirements to dispatch and management in a timely manner.
- Service, inspect and clean vans and related equipment as required by State and district policy.
- Maintain control of student passengers as related to safety; report unsafe acts or conditions which required the attention of any person other than the driver.
- Complete forms, records and reports as required by the State or local school district policies.
- Successfully complete school bus and van driver training programs and courses established by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and the school district.
- Operate a vans in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and policies declared by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
- Perform all duties of the position within the scope of Kennewick School District policies and procedures, including regular attendance and punctuality.
- Perform other van driver related duties as directed by local school district policies.
- Accomplish all tasks in a professional manner. Model appropriate and healthy adult behavior. Interact with people and speak in a manner that reflects community standards of politeness, civility and human sensitivity.
The van driver will:
- Operate and check all van equipment and accessories including but not limited to fire extinguishers, highway warning kits, snow chains, first aid kits, etc.
- Perform required operational and safety inspections of the van and all related equipment.
- Clean the van to include interior/exterior sweeping and washing, maintaining appropriate of fuel, oil and coolant, tire inflation levels, etc.
- Operate all hand and foot controls installed in a van as required by Washington State (minimum) specification.
- Perform basic first aid as appropriate, which may include CPR.
- Complete clerical tasks as assigned, both in writing and on computer; legible and accurate completion of forms, records, time sheets, trip requests, route studies, trouble reports, misconduct reports, accident reports and other clerical activities as may be required.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.

- Mobility: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, move easily up and down stairs without assistance, push or pull heavy objects, sit, kneel and crouch, twist and bend, regularly use feet and legs and arms to operate bus, use hands to type, finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arm.
- Sense: The employee is required to talk/hear conversations and other sounds. The employee must be able to communicate effectively in person, over the telephone and by using the radio communications system. The employee is occasionally required to taste and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- Lifting: The employee must be able to lift or move up to 50-75 pounds or more, dependent on student weight. Must also be able to lift overhead. The employee may be required to physically move quickly in an emergency or while performing student supervision duties.

- Physical Hazards: While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, is driving a moving vehicle and can encounter all types of weather and road hazards. The employee may be exposed to weather extremes, including wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat or cold or ice conditions. The noise level in this work environment is moderate.
