Summary The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas is one of the largest and busiest in the nation, spanning 43 counties and 44,000 square miles and representing 8.3 million people from the Houston area to the Mexico border. The Office offers a unique, challenging, and rewarding experience for highly motivated attorneys. Location Houston, Texas Duties Handle land condemnation matters and related cases involving the border with Mexico. Conduct immigration enforcement matters, including issuing warrants and defending asylum and passport cases. Manage general civil litigation matters for the Department of Justice. Engage in frequent courtroom appearances in federal court. Responsibilities will grow and civil assignments may become more complex as training and experience progress. Qualifications Required Qualifications J.D. degree and active membership in the bar of any U.S. jurisdiction. At least one year of post‑J.D. legal experience. United States citizenship. United States citizen or national and registered for Selective Service, if applicable. Preferred Qualifications Strong academic credentials. Superior legal research and writing skills. Quick analytical ability to articulate case‑related issues accurately and precisely. High‑volume courtroom experience, including first‑chair jury trials. Outstanding organizational, time‑management, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a supportive, professional team environment with other AUSAs, support staff, and investigative agencies. Demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service. Computer proficiency and self‑sufficiency in preparing legal research, correspondence, and pleadings. Additional Requirements Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Initial appointment conditioned upon a satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication (fingerprint, credit, tax checks, drug testing). Continued employment subject to a favorable background investigation. Type of Position: This is a Term position not‑to‑exceed March 31, 2028, and may be extended or made permanent without further competition. Salary and Benefits Salary range (including locality): $85,270.00 to $195,100.00. Other Details Relocation expenses will not be authorized. Travel: 1 to 5 nights per month, on average, may vary.
