Job Description Anticipated Opening School Spring #5926184 Haverhill High School is seeking an ML SLIFE teacher to participate in a professional learning opportunity focused on the Science of Reading (SOR) and its application to multilingual learners, particularly students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE). The teacher will participate in a Science of Reading course and serve as a teacher-leader in the integration of evidence-based literacy practices into the ML SLIFE curriculum. The goal of this work is to strengthen literacy instruction for SLIFE students by identifying, adapting, and implementing SOR-aligned practices that are responsive to the unique linguistic, academic, and instructional needs of our students. This position combines professional learning, collaboration, curriculum development, and classroom application. Key Responsibilities Professional Learning Participate fully in the designated Science of Reading course and related professional learning activities. Develop a strong understanding of evidence-based literacy practices, including foundational skills, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, language comprehension, and reading comprehension. Examine how Science of Reading principles can be appropriately adapted for multilingual learners and students with limited or interrupted formal education. Reflect on current SLIFE instructional practices and identify opportunities to strengthen alignment with research-based literacy practices. Curriculum Integration Collaborate with ML and curriculum colleagues to identify opportunities to integrate SOR-aligned practices into the existing SLIFE curriculum. Review current curriculum materials, units, lessons, and assessments through a Science of Reading lens. Develop or revise instructional materials, lessons, routines, and assessments to incorporate evidence-based literacy practices. Ensure that SOR practices are integrated meaningfully into content and language instruction rather than treated as a separate intervention. Consider the unique needs of SLIFE students, including gaps in formal education, literacy development, academic language, and prior educational experiences, when adapting SOR practices. Classroom Application Pilot and implement selected SOR-aligned strategies and instructional routines within the ML SLIFE classroom. Use student work and relevant data to evaluate the effectiveness of new instructional practices. Adjust instruction and curriculum based on student outcomes and ongoing reflection. Document successful practices, resources, and lessons learned that can be shared with other ML educators. Collaboration and Teacher Leadership Work collaboratively with the ML department and other relevant instructional leaders to support the implementation of SOR-aligned practices. Share learning, resources, and effective strategies with colleagues through PLCs, department meetings, or other professional learning opportunities. Contribute to the development of a shared approach to literacy instruction for SLIFE students across classrooms and grade levels. Serve as a resource to colleagues as Haverhill High School continues to strengthen literacy instruction for multilingual learners. Expected Outcomes Develop a deeper understanding of the Science of Reading and its application to multilingual learners. Identify high-impact SOR practices that are appropriate and responsive to SLIFE students. Strengthen the alignment between SOR research and the existing ML SLIFE curriculum. Develop and/or revise instructional resources that incorporate evidence-based literacy practices. Implement and evaluate new instructional strategies in the classroom. Share effective practices and resources with the ML team. Contribute to a more consistent, research-informed approach to literacy instruction for SLIFE students at Haverhill High School. Qualifications Current Haverhill High School ML teacher serving SLIFE students. Strong interest in literacy instruction and improving outcomes for multilingual learners. Willingness to engage in professional learning, reflection, collaboration, and curriculum development. Commitment to using student data and work samples to inform instructional decisions. Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and share learning and resources with the broader ML team. Time Commitment Attend and actively participate in the designated Science of Reading course. Complete assigned course learning and application activities. Apply SOR-aligned practices within the classroom. Contribute to ongoing reflection and sharing of outcomes with the ML team. Purpose of the Position The ultimate purpose of this work is to ensure that our SLIFE students have access to high-quality, explicit, systematic, and research-informed literacy instruction while continuing to receive the language and content supports they need as multilingual learners. The SLIFE teachers will help bridge research and practice by translating Science of Reading learning into meaningful, sustainable improvements to the Haverhill High School SLIFE curriculum.
